A new report from the New York Times Magazine goes behind the scenes of the VP selection process and claims that Trump's first choice was his former rival, Ohio  Gov. John Kasich. Perhaps more interestingly, the report sheds light on the unprecedented level of power Trump plans to delegate to his vice president if elected. According to the Times, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., was responsible for vetting the potential candidates. Here's a scene from one conservation he had with a Kasich adviser.

Did he have any interest in being the most powerful vice president in history?

When Kasich’s adviser asked how this would be the case, Donald Jr. explained that his father’s vice president would be in charge of domestic and foreign policy.

Then what, the adviser asked, would Trump be in charge of?

I'm not pro-Trump, at all, but this single attitude doesn't deserve the hate he is getting in this topic. So he would like to stay in his own home, a place he feels good sleeping at night. That's fine. In my country, the president sleeps in his own home rather than the palace, his office, and it's considered a humble gesture.

Except literally no one would say about Hillary.

The rallies were narcissistic fuel for Trump. They didn't tire him, they nourished his ego. Sometimes when his campaign staff wanted him to do fundraisers, he would only agree if he could hold a rally in the same town that day. He even held rallies in Connecticut and New York. The rallies had nothing to do with winning states. Trump's main reason for continuing his presidential run was the affirmation of cheering crowds. Now those crowds are gone and he is going to have to deal with actually, you know...being President. The truth is there's almost no appeal for Trump in the actual job of being President.
