Wrecking Ball was shot with crisp digital cameras, using white backgrounds, as Miley did some controversial things while rolling around naked. Terry did a lot of creative direction here.

DWUW was shot with crisp digital cameras, using white backgrounds, as Gaga did some controversial things while rolling around naked. Terry did a lot of creative direction here.

When Gaga finally saw Wrecking Ball, she flipped. She was pissed, and was pretty mad at Terry for not telling her that the last video he'd shot was nearly identical to the one they had just made together. ARTPOP's era was already a giant mess, with no proper manager, and the media comparing her to everyone and their mother--so she, not wanting to risk "she copied Miley" comparisons, scrapped the entire video. Notice how she's never worked with Terry since then? Notice how their second photo book never came out? Yeah, she was pretty upset. She felt that Terry should've warned her, and not shot DWUW so similarly.

That's pretty much it--she didn't cancel it because of the rape implications. She didn't cancel it cause it was "too shocking". She didn't cancel it cause of R. Kelly. She cancelled it cause she was hurt by someone she thought to be a friend, a confidant. She cancelled it cause an already bad era would've/could've gone even worse by releasing the video to a media ready to call her a "rip-off".

I know it's not necessarily the reason you'd expect for Gaga (I was kind of taken aback when I found this out)...but as time has gone by, I saw the pressure she was under with ARTPOP and understand it now.

The Wrecking Ball video came out Sept. 9, 2013, DWUW single came out Oct. 21st. There's no way Lady Gaga hadn't seen Wrecking Ball before filming the DWUW video. It was the most controversial video of the year.

Thank you for letting us all know!  I do remember Wrecking ball coming out, I could see why she got so pissed. I respect her decision to not put it out. Do you honestly think that the video that's out in asia is fake?

Pretty sure they were shooting DWUW before the release date. Kinda like how Ruth Hogben's video for Venus was finished before that single came out. And also pretty sure that Gaga was so busy at the time that she wasn't sitting around watching music videos.

Gaga did work with Terry afterwards though. He did backstage photography for her during the Roseland shows which was a good 3 months after the DWUW video was supposed to come out. I'm not saying that this means what you said isn't true, I'm just pointing that out.

Re: Terry: I did know he shot those pics for her there, but other than that, there's not much else. Maybe they were trying to work together again, I don't know.

The single covers were shot by Steven Klein. The video was going to be directed by Ruth though.

But Wrecking Ball was out months before, wasn't it ? And white backgrounds are usual in Terry's work I think. But yes when we has extracts I noticed it and just thought "ok maybe it's the year when all the popstars do a music video with Terry Richardson".

Anyway thank you for this, it makes sense with what she said, that people around her betrayed her etc.

Ooooh, and when they switched to DWUW they dropped the Venus plans and went with Terry. Got it. Always thought they shot a little video for Venus, scrapped it, and went with Terry's bigger DWUW video.

The video for Venus wasn't shot either. And if it was that's all the more reason that the DWUW video wouldn't have been filmed as well, because it was released as a promo single before being switched to the second official single. There would have been no reason to shoot the video if she didn't even know it was going to be an official single.

I truly believe she hadn't seen Miley's video when they were pre-planning and eventually shooting DWUW. She was insanely busy with ARTPOP promo, and I was told that she found out during editing.
