giskardsb 12,565
one of the things I've come to admire most about Gaga is that she isn't afraid of growing older. Lately she specifically has been mentioning how she's maturing and "becoming a woman" in interviews. I think this is a breath of fresh air in our hyper youth oriented culture, especially in the pop music field which is one of the worst offenders. Pop women in particular are expected to stay "young" and keep aiming for the typical pop demographic, which is mostly teens and pre-teens. They aren't allowed to mature and are often still putting forth stuff for "the kids" into their 40's and 50's. Gaga fans are certainly not immune to this, as the rash of negative comments on threads that occur anytime she "dresses old" or "looks old" or whatever. This is an insult that gets thrown around here and is sympomatic of the problem that women though this culture face as they age (men have nowhere near the same issue.) Thankfully Gaga has never been afraid to dress "mature" or "old" and her style isn't dependent on the ageism present in pop culture. I think it helps that Gaga was never a Nicolodean or Disney girl and always skewed to a bit older demographic. I think her music will also change as she ages, not necessarily to a non-pop or more "mature" format (whatever that means), but in terms of reflecting her current state in life and making music that is not so much targeted at teens but at the fans as they grow up with her. I don't think she cares about continuously speaking to teenagers, I think she cares about continuously speaking to her fanbase, even as they grow older themselves. Some people expect their pop stars to remain forever young, as sort of a proxy fountain of youth that they can return to in order to feel young themselves. I don't think Gaga is going to be that kind of pop artist. However, if you want an that speaks to you throughout your life with relevance and meaning to you at any time, Gaga is probably going to be great choice. I agree with most of this BUT not with the bold part. Why does she dress "old" and wear unflattering dresses when she can afford more flattering clothes or makeup? I know it's the same person behind the makeup, but why is it an admirable thing to wear things that don't suit you?

The Surrealist 27,470
I'm kinda annoyed at this. Gaga always said something like embrace your youth, etc. She was the most childish and most mature popsinger of her time. Did y'all forget her obsession with Arielle? And the was she dressed was always somewhat fantastic. Her imagination was so big and no other singer came close. Now she filled her face so much it looks so hard. And her Jo Calderone attitude is so masculine, it puts me off. It's not natural and makes her old. In my opinion, she tries way too hard with this Calderone attitude. She should just be herself and not put on an act anymore (or use fillers )
SamJ 8,008
I think Gaga looks young, she looks different to all other pop acts, I think her whole image is totally disconnected from the idea of age.

I'm thankful that Gaga fights against these stereotypes and would encourage you to think about why it's so important to you that Gaga fit that image you have.
