Are you surprised by the critics' mixed reception to 'Joanne'?

I can't really understand it personally. I know I'm biased because I'm a fan, but I'm trying to look at it as objectively as I can. This is her most emotionally revealing, sonically daring, personal and touching album to date. Not only that but there is a heavy focus on live instrumentation and untouched vocals, which is something that critics usually lap up.

There might not be radio "hits" on the album, but surely most critics would appreciate that she's not trying for big Bad Romance choruses and is instead focusing on sound and aesthetic. But apparently not...

I dunno, I just think some of the reviewers had already made up their minds about the album before listening to it, because most of the negative reviews always refer to Gaga in the context of her career rather than this particular album. Or maybe I'm just biased and maybe the album is deserving of the 68 on Metacritic. What are your thoughts about the mixed reviews?

Not really. Gaga will forever divide the critics. Some love to praise her while others love to pick her apart. It's why it is good that she is simply making music for her, cause she'll never please the critics.

Yes very. They're idiots. I mean honestly whats the point  everybody has different tastes in music. There are 6 billion Ppl in this world. And 22 Ppl score an abum. Its pretty fvcking stupid tbh

In a way, yes, but also I can understand why.

It's a great album, for sure. easily one of her best. But it's also a really different album from any of the pop she's released in the past. For some people, that might be a bit jarring and the fact that it's such a drastic change could sway some people's opinions. Even some fans here were worried about how different it was compared to her past music.

I feel like if we gave Joanne a year, it'd grow on a lot of people. it's a great album, it's just a very surprising musical direction for some.

She could co-write an entire album with Jesus Christ and it would be dragged by the critics.

I certainly thought it would get a high 80's on metacritic, but now I've read some of the negative reviews I do understand where they come from. It's a strong album, but its still not too cohesive with its theme & the later end of the album just drags on compared to the explosiveness of the first half.

Yes. For the longest time, this seemed to be the type of album that critics wanted from her. Now, they want her to go back to what they were criticizing before. She'll always have people to whom she will never be a winner, it seems. I just didn't think that certain critics could be as bad as run-of-the-mill haters.

Majority of those reviews were biased against Gaga herself (her fashion,  her personality,  just being her) and did not review Joanne based in the music.

No. I mean it's Gaga. I'm surprised that some of them even heard the Album before reviewing it badly.

Gaga will forever be like marmite, you can love her or hate her.

Some critics will worship her, but others will continuously put her down because of her earlier persona.

But saying that, TFM is her most acclaimed album - during the times when she was "outrageous" so I dunno

Nope. Most of the "mixed" reactions focused on Gaga's image or public reception instead of the actual music, just like last the time with ARTPOP, Cheek to Cheek and Born This Way. All of those albums are objectively great in technical terms, such as execution, hooks & production, yet none of them came close to the 80's on Metacritic.

Yeah I just hoped it would be different this time around. I guess not. Some critics have boxed her in to this Fame Monster image and for whatever reason they just want her to stay that way forever. I'm starting to get the feeling she will always be compared to those first few years of her career. She's a victim of her own success.
