OMF 3,443
Madonna is great and all her albums have great tracks. The issue is that lately she has been seen as desperately trying to cling on to her past image. Her choice of singles and imagery aren't always successful either lately. But, she has had such a long, successful career and she is cursed to have to follow her past success with music which is relevant to younger generations - because let's face it, those are the biggest buyers of pop/dance music - and that is hard to do when you are in your 50s. She is amazing though and always looking forward to her new stuff. I don't listen to her albums as much as I do to Gaga, but when out at a club or a party her music is always played and we love dancing and singing along. Rebel Heart is a great album, spoiled by mediocre attention-seeking tracks like "Bitch, I'm Madonna " (which brought Britney to mind) and the silliness of collaborating two albums in a row with Nicky Minaj (I mean come on). What made Madonna amazing was that she chose her collaborators carefully and usually avoiding working with well established superstars which made her sound fresh to the mainstream. But once she started working with Kanye West, Pharrel, Nicky Minaj etc that put her into direct competition to the likes of Katy Perry and other newer stars. And no matter how great Madonna is, trying to compete directly with much younger versions of herself is an uphill battle. Still kudos to her. Rebel Heart was mostly great, the album cover is iconic and her tour was brilliant.
