seriously that guy needs to get on his horse and ride away. and he won the nobel peace prize like are you kidding me? -_-

Part of me knows that times of peace paradoxically arise in the aftermath of the most brutal warfare, but either way, if a world war does occur and Russia loses, Russia will no longer exist and I'm not sure if the US will exist in the same way again. If the Russia ends up winning, that's just going to be utter hell for the entire world and it's horrifying to even think about it

Additionally, I'm not sure if the US, or any of the West, is ready for a war of such caliber. I don't believe the next president, whoever they will be, is going to be able to handle this task. Donald has no idea how to run a military and I'm uncertain if Hillary is competent enough to do the same; it will truly be a test of Hillary's leadership

they invaded Georgia and Ukraine for the sole reason to prevent those countries from joining the NATO. Following both, the Georgia war of 2008 and the Ukraine insurgency of 2014, these two countries lost their territorial integrity (South Ossetia and Abkhazia proclaimed themselves independent from Georgia, while Crimea and "Donbass" proclaimed themselves independent from Ukraine). If a country lacks territorial integrity, it can't join the NATO. It's simple and rational, much as everything that concerns Russia's foreign policy. It's just cold calculation rather than the desire to ressurect the Soviet Union as many people here believe.

Lithuania is a totally different question. Russia can't stop Lithuania from joining the NATO because Lithuania has been a NATO member for already thirteen years. Russia's military alertness now is explained by the fact that Russian military industries are in the final stages of mastering the production of the new-generation weapons, the Hypersonic Missiles. They are planning to renew their nuclear arsenal with these new types of missiles by 2021.

The NATO countries' military authorities and the USA generals specifically are extremely worried over this fact, because the possession of such weapons makes any defense system in the world utterly useless. It means that the USA can build as many radar stations in Romania, Poland and Czech republic as they wish, for each of this station will be completely useless, even though millions, if not billions of dollars have been already invested in it. The world's technological progress is simply not mature enough to provide us with the defense systems against hypersonic missiles.

The USA, on the side, are developing the production of the first ever hypersonic airplane which will have the abilities to take down any target in any part of the world in less than a couple of hours. Russian army doesn't have a system to defend itself against such an airplane either. So, giving that the production in both countries is not interrupted, we can expect the USA and Russia to obtain the new generation weapons of mass destruction by 2021. Such a scenario sees the tremendous rise of Russia's influence in the world politics and the de-facto switch to the bipolar world, which is not a happy news for Washington.

That's why Russian's officials are feeling worried and nervous now: they fear that either Washington alone or NATO might try to undertake some military measures to prevent Russia from renewing the nuclear arsenal with hypersonic missiles. The Baltic countries, in Russian military strategists' opinion, look like a perfect spot from where NATO might start its attack, and they are trying to mount the pressure over the region.

I agree with a lot of this, but NATO putting pressure is helpful and needed against Russia. Putin being in control there, is obvious to the rest of the world, that there is an issue with the government there. NATO will not be the first to attack, but I can tell you that they will protect Lithuania, and the US will be among the first to step in no matter who is president.

China/US relations are paramount to the protection of the Baltic states outside Russia, and to keeping the most world order. I don't want another world war, but Putin is the sort of woubded animal mentality, if tested, he will strike out. Let us hope he knows his bounds and the current military strength of those who would oppose him. I have no doubt that the military technological advancement of the west, particularly the US, would increase more quickly in correlation with possible upcoming wartime (if it hasn't already).

I think it's not true, it may be just a media thing. Tbh if something was really happening it would be on every news report and social media.

as a person from lithuania i can assure you that it's more than just a media thing. it's quite fascinating actually but russian government puts people against each other very quietly and strategically. obviously they would want to make it seem like their next occupation is valid like they tried to with crimea and the rigged referendum which sorta backfired.

lithuania and other baltic countries are just a small dot on the map, we dont have a huge supply of soldiers or weapons etc so the fact that russia often tries to undermine us is a big deal, i was even surprised to see someone talk about this here, since usually people don't really care about what happens in post soviet countries.

I'm curious how this would turn out if Trump wins. He seems to be friends with Putin. Would he go against Russia?

Obviously not. He's already said Clinton's too hard on him, and she hasn't even left the election.

Yes and no. Mutually assured destruction isn't really that brutal, just futile. So, while the sentiment used to be true, with more traditional age-old conflicts, the modern era has shifted the reality of the phrase off center.

If Lithuania is invaded, there's no doubt in my mind that Obama or Clinton would step in with Nato to crush the aggression. We stand by our Nato allies.

I mean, my belief is that in order to understand something, you have to investigate or experience its inverse to know the inverse to know what isn't the something, e.g. in order to understand love you have to know hate, in order to appreciate life you must appreciate death, in order to understand existence you have to understand non-existence

In truth, I realize that this world is futile, we are such artificial beings living under our own artificial sovereigns, i.e. the Leviathans that we have created to keep us away from the State of Nature, which that's good and all but it just goes to show how meaningless our efforts truly are. One day, you'll just black out and no longer exist and you will not have any idea of it; you will become a part of a body you will or greatness that you do not know and your atoms will become one with the cosmos. I don't matter as much as anyone else, and if it wasn't for my family, I would see no use in living if it means to suffer in my search for release, which the only true release from any pain is death

Very Ciceronian, very Epicurean, overall interestingly uninteresting

Somebody needs to get rid of Putin! It bad enough that Iran, Syria, China and North Korea are on Russia's side.

China has too much buisiness in Europe to get involved in it. Same goes to Iran. And Syria is an overall mess

What a wonderful time to be Lithuanian. :saladga: Still hoping that Russia will not make any moves towards us because we're a part of NATO. I know it's not a guarantee but still some kind of a relief. Otherwise, that would get really messy. On the other hand, Putin is getting older and I don't know what's going in his mind.

as a Lithuanian who does not live there for years I can assure you that this textbook is a big load of crap. there's less than a 5% chance that Lithuania will be invaded by Russia anytime in the next 10 years :awkney: Putin is not stupid and he would never invade a NATO country, especially not Lithuania, who happens to lately have 'amazing' relations with USA and Germany/EU when it comes to border defense or army. Our dumb president is just seeking for attention while causing havoc among stupid people with her propaganda which just helps to launder even more money via different Lithuanian 'defense' institutions.

If you asked any random Lithuanian person on the street about this situation they'd just laugh it off and think you're stupid. :awkney: (Implying you'd ask a clever, not a gullible person who believes everything what our corrupt government says Lithuanian)

I'm from Lithuania and of course I am scared but I don't think that Russia is going  to do something. Maybe later  (2018 or 2019) but not at this time  :/
