A second-half album

I just finished my first listen of Joanne and one thing that struck me immediately was how supremely strong the second half of the album was, especially compared to the first half.

With all of Gaga's other albums, it seems like the best content is front loaded. The first half of The Fame is the six singles and the title track; the second half has fan favorites but is undoubtedly the weaker half (anything against Paparazzi is going to lose, let's be real). The Fame Monster's first half has Bad Romance and Monster, which is enough for it to be stronger in my opinion (although having Speechless on its side helps too). Born This Way could go either way, but to me having Marry the Night, the title track, Judas, Hair, and Schibe outweighs having You & I (my favorite Gaga song) and The Edge of Glory, but it's close. And ARTPOP opens with the trio of Aura, Venus, and G.U.Y. (plus I'm not the biggest fans of Donatella, Fashion!, or MJH), so the first half of that album is stronger for me as well.

But with Joanne, I couldn't get into Diamond Heart on first listen, the title track was underwhelming, and John Wayne caught me totally by surprise. But I fell in love with every single track after Sinner's Prayer, which I thought was 10x better than the live Dive Bar version. Come To Mama might be my new favorite Gaga song, and Hey Girl and Grigio Girls were both pleasant surprises (at least after reading what y'all said about them on here). Just Another Day is the reincarnation of the Beatles, and Angel Down needs no explanation. After a full listen, I was surprised how strong the second half of the album was. I thought that A-YO was going to be my favorite song on the album, but it's probably 2nd or 3rd (which is still pretty good). I could honestly listen to tracks 8-14 on repeat, they're that good!

Which half do you prefer?

Been a long time but I'm back in town, and this time I'm not leaving without you

It's funny cause I thought the complete opposite. As usual, the hits are front loaded and although i will learn to love, I only listen to Angel Down for the last half.

Currently listening to Joanne

I was super pumped for Hey Gurl and now I hate it. it is the worst on the album. I hated the snippet of Grigio Girls but now I love it.

I don't hate sinner's prayer any more, but I skip it as much as PI and Million Reasons atm.

I prefer the first Half up to Dancin' in Circles over all plus the Bonus Tracks.

Well, neither. I find both equally beautiful, and I wouldn't change any of it. That being said, we can agree on this:

Its so rare that I like all the songs on any album but I can honestly say I love all of them and find that the whole record works well as a whole

I think the entire album is incredibly coherent and I'd love for Gaga to talk about her justifications for the placement of each song. I'd say the second half is less commercial-friendly and even less Little Monster-friendly, but it's a raw emotional journey that we're starting to get used to. Really impressed~

In my opinion, Joanne is Gaga's most balanced album as far as the track list is concerned. I don't agree that the 2nd half is the strongest, it's just as good as the 1st.

Hey Girl was the biggest surprise for me--I really love that it's a funk/soul song. Some monsters say it "goes nowhere" but I think that's kind of the point--it's just two otherworldly talented singers making harmonies on a nice, smooth melody. I also love how conversational "Hey girl" sounds. In any case, I LOVE the second half of the album; especially the 1-2-3 punch of Come to Mama, Hey Girl, Angel Down  I also love Grigio Girls and Just Another Day

There really isn't a bad song on the album IMO.

lol I thought exactly the first half had the highlights

but the second half is amazing too

at first I couldn't get into Grigio Girls/Come to Mama/Just Another Day

but I literally cried watching Gaga talk/perform Grigio Girls so it's a favorite now too and the other two took another listen to fully appreciate them

I guess I was just too slayed by the first half that I was only half listening afterwards

Blocking everyone who has anything bad to say about Hey Girl.. 👀

I legitimately like every song on the album, but yeah I definitely tend to favor the second half of the album.

My three fave songs are from the second half (Hey Girl, Angel Down, Grigio Girls), but also my three least favourite songs are too (Come To Mama, Sinner's Prayer, Just Another Day) so it's hard to say which half I like more
