This was pretty scathing, and I stopped reading after the author described the success of ARTPOP as "flopped." No legitimate journalist would write like that. I've always taken the New York Times with a grain of salt because they're so up their own ass. Hopefully people will listen to the album and just decide for themselves. But it IS a brilliantly executed album and one that NO OTHER pop girl of the 2010's could have made. Just because it does not quite achieve what it sets out to does not mean it is not good, worthy, or valuable. It's all of those things. And in 2016, for an artist of Gaga's legacy, caliber and personal artistic interest, it is extremely APPROPRIATE. He seems to be glossing right over this. HOWEVER... his criticisms were not all completely invalid. For instance, these quoted by @Storm I completely agree with as well (and arrived at the same conclusions myself before reading the review). 3 hours ago, Storm said: "Ms. Welch’s singing isn’t nearly as brazen as it ordinarily is (though it easily outclasses Lady Gaga’s)." "But while “Joanne” is elemental, nothing about it is bare." "It’s naïve in its use of roots music and rock as signifiers of something true" I would also add these comments to those I agree with: "No pop album in recent memory has featured such a wide array of collaborations that strip those collaborators of their particular charms." "The only guest who holds her own here is the songwriter Hillary Lindsey" “A-Yo,” with its exuberant horns, tart handclaps and noodle-limp guitars, sounds like... a song drawn from one of those live musicals that have been littering network television since the demise of “Glee.” But those ideas are just singular extracts that do not reflect what the entire album does achieve --- which is assembling an incredibly cohesive collection of songs that offer a distinct aesthetic that is unlike anything else in the mainstream female pop realm today. And most importantly, the music is ENJOYABLE and littered with substantive hooks and melodies that give each song lasting power and repeat-listen appeal. This review loses all credibility with me for 2 comments alone: "Instead, it’s confused, full of songs that feel like concepts in search of a home, small theater pieces extruded from other imaginary productions and collected in one miscellany bin." The last statement above is just 100% completely not true --- in fact, the OPPOSITE is true. This collection of songs is cohesive, not miscellaneous. And finally, the closing comment... "But instead of taking offense and tossing off a tweet, she should maybe give them a call." ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME, NYT?! YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS. You are going to sharpen the knives and critique the 'Joanne' album as if it should be held to the utmost standards of music theory and artistic expression, but then you suggest she should just be doing throw-away pop with zero identity produced by a couple of frat bros? "The Chainsmokers don’t see dance music as avant-garde theater or sociopolitical provocation. They see it as quick-stepping pop, which, though it’s fuzzy in the rearview, is also part of Lady Gaga’s legacy." It's clear from the above comment that the reviewer has absolutely NO IDEA who Lady Gaga really is. He really thinks that Gaga's early work was comparable to what The Chainsmokers are doing? Really? Did he forget --- or ever even KNOW --- what her mantra was since the very beginning? New York Times, I have 3 words for you from Joanne herself... Music 15,215 Posted October 20, 2016 Share Posted October 20, 2016 knowing their history with reviewing Gaga's previous works, they probably had this already written before listening to the album; a pre-fabricated idea of what it might be, based on listening to PI & MR. glad Gaga spoke up on this unfair criticism. objectively, this album is a masterpiece and her best yet. too bad they can't see it. But I think they will like some of the tracks. Even if they aren't fans of the entire album, they will give a fair review and give her credit for the things they typically like.
