Reviews are opinion pieces. This was hardly the worst review Gaga has been given.

Monsters went from their fav being universally praised to universally panned and they don't know how to deal with it. Emailing the editors of the NYT because Lady Gaga got a slightly bad review is mortifying. Calling an art critic "abhorrent" for having the gall to call a flop a flop and focus as much on her image as her music is ridiculous.

More like you're ridiculous for rationalizing what should be a professional who acts like it and doesn't immaturely degrade something without even a valid point to back it up. People like you may be all for people trashing others, but that doesn't make it okay. It says a lot about the kind of person you are and your character.

I for one will never stand behind professionals who use their position to inject their biases so blatantly into something that attempts to slander someone's career .

Because people do what's popular instead of doing what's right. People like to hear that Gaga flops.

Yeah. As we all know, all people wanted back in 2009-2011 when she was her biggest, was to see her fail. I recall so many people saying she wouldn't be famous in a couple years, she'd be a flash in the pan, etc etc. It's disappointing, because those same people are probably living for this now. Which, is strange to me because she's done so much outside of her own music the last two years, it's crazy to ever consider her ~irrelevant at all.

We've only gotten two reviews so far, so I won't stress too much. But, I'm surprised at this one. I thought Joanne would gather decent reviews, maybe not glowing reviews, but good ones none the less.

Did you even READ the review? It is totally unfair and unprofessional, and he deserves to be dragged to pits of hell. BYE

I read the review. It is mixed but mostly negative. It isn't unprofessional in any way. It's not even a scathing review.

A negative review is now slander? :toofunny::rip:

What part of this review upset you so much, specifically what sentences?

You can't even call it a review since it barely discusses any actual music. What upset me so much is that he could not be more biased against her and used the piece only to advance an agenda against her. What is the point in bringing up literally anything he can to advance it?  It does not belong here, except for maybe a legitimate criticism here and there about her previous efforts.

I expect a review to actually review the music, not an opinion piece about why he thinks shes terrible. Also, it was completely unnecessary to bring in the chainsmokers. What do they have ANYTHING to do with Joanne other than trying to stir the pot by disrespecting a music icon? They don't have to like Gaga or the song, but you don't have to be so disrespectful about it.

I expect LEGITIMATE reasons for why you don't like something, not because "it sucks" that's not good enough for me, and it shouldn't be good enough for a professional producer and music critic.

Not even, JON CARAMANICA wrote that  article  He's is just a low life  journalist who gets off on bashing people creative projects... he did the same thing to Beyoncé sister! He is trying his hardest to break free of his mediocre success. Once I finish my degree for journalism, I promise to put joker like him to bed for good. He's a piece of **** turd

Just for this you deserve a brilliant and successful career as a journalist. Go show'em!

"Bare bones" can be acclaimed, but even non Gaga fans are seeing something is up with some of these reviews (particularly the NYT). Overly harsh for a pretty innocuous album.

Alright but the fact that they even mentioned The ****ing Chainsmokers in this review indicates a huge amount of predetermined bias against Gaga and that is NOT good journalism. Disliking an album and giving CONCRETE, LEGITIMATE reasons as to why would make this an appropriate review.

@SKANK i agree with you on two points: 1) it's fair of the reviewer to contextualise Joanne with her previous work (even if the constant ARTPOP comparisons are tired to us fans) and 2) these emails are messy and will be met with pretty much nothing other than an eye roll.

You have to admit the review is pretty thin on actual music criticism, it makes me wonder why he even bothered to give it a 40. It sounds like he didn't like a thing about it!

on a side note your profile picture disturbs me.

I asked for a specific quote from the review which you think is "unprofessional" and "abhorrent" but you seem unable to do that.

As for them mentioning the Chainsmokers, her "feud" with them is what has been getting her headlines, it is also what this fan base has been talking about obsessively. To mention them is acceptable, especially in the context in which they did, by suggesting she should be collaborating with them musically.

I don't agree with the review, but I don't think it is unprofessional in any way.

Any review for a Lady Gaga album that just talks about the music, or even mostly about the music, would be missing half of what Lady Gaga is about. Her image and the way she sells her music has always been what has made her an influential artist.

Would it be nice to hear more about the music? Sure. But we will get that from music publications, not the NYT.

Universal acclaim was never going to be in the cards so let's just get these type of reviews over with early and let the great outweigh the bad soon enough!
