What Should Have Been the Lead? (If you think PI, that's great, just comment below. There wasn't room in the poll.)

Diamond Heart for sure. I don't get the love for Dancin' In Circles tbh, but I would not have liked it as the lead at all (though I'd prefer it to PI :awkney:). Diamond Heart is just THAT song, and it would have been a great lead. It would have performed better also I think.

Perfect Illusion, lol.

I had the feeling it'd be the most radio-ready song from the album and I was right. Trust my words, if any other song would've been released as a single, fans would've gone crazy over the new sound. Perfect Illusion is a nice transition between ARTPOP and Gaga's new sound.

I like Joanne but compared to tracks from Born This Way and ARTPOP, all of the songs sound like ALBUM songs, not singles. Yes, even Dancin' in Circles. They made a good call on releasing Ayo as another track before the album drops.

Bloody hooker

John Wayne

This mutual gaze was a “longing to touch” or a "pre-coitus" stare.

Perfect Illusion or Diamond Heart. Maybe Diamond Heart since it feels more like an 'adventure' than PI in terms of the style and Gaga's vocals -- pull people in. Still great either way

PI was the right choice at the end of the day, while I feel DH is stronger, it's a good plan to release (one of the better songs, but not the best) first, then release the albums best song as the 2nd.

All of you saying that Joanne has no radio-friendly songs and saying Perfect Illusion was the safest choice when Perfect Illusion is the harshest, guitar crunchiest song on the entire album... if Starboy can be at No. 2 on the Hot 100, a trap song void of any pop elements like Panda can hit No. 1, and a slow, pulsating R&B Needed Me actually cracked the top 10, I think there could be a better lead than Perfect Illusion out of the songs found on Joanne, e.g. Diamond Heart... :madge:

I don't see how anyone can say PI was the right choice when it bombed and did nothing to change peoples perceptions of her. It would have been a much better idea to release a song with better lyrics and vocals that serves as somewhat of a stylistic departure, even if it had bombed commercially it would have made a stronger statement. Million Reasons, Diamond Heart, or even the title track could have worked in this regard.
