I'm the only one thinking that Perfect Illusion was the only song on Joanne that was requested by Interscope because they didn't feel that the album was commercial enough? I feel like they said to her "Do the music you want, but create a single that can be GP friendly and let's see how it goes"

Since Kevin was called on Joanne just for this song and Gaga herself told that the song wasn't her idea but his, maybe this theory explains why it's the only one that followed this path. Now that the song went "not that good", maybe she will follow her "original plan" and promote the singles she wants?

What do you think?

EDIT: I like the song and I don't care about its chart success, it's just a thought

you are probably right. Labels would have people going through albums, and picking singles. I guess, Joanne is only a very personal ala Adele's 21 but minus the commercial success Gaga tries so hard to emulate.

Nah, I think Gaga wanted a ballad to lead but the label wanted one of the more dance(ish) songs but they managed to settle on Perfect Illusion.

Born Brave

Joanne has the quality of 21. I dont think she is going to have to promo this album that much for it to sell.

I agree. She's even said that PI is not indicitative of what the record sounds like and that they didn't follow any radio trends.

They didn't know how 'Joanne' would be received.

It's not just about Radio Friendly, the song is short and starts strong. They probably thouht it could be the one that need no editing for Radio or it was done like that from the start.
