It's just a result of more people coming forwards and speaking out to further condem the Brexit decision. After all Brexit had nothing to do with LGBT issues and was spearheaded by immigration. Of course it may give people the entitlement to hate all minorities but I don't think it did. Largely just racial/cultural discrimination. It's certainly possible it's neonazisms rise, it's also possible it's immigrants, or a rise in reporting hate crimes, or even an expanded definition of what constitutes a hate crime. But we have no idea from this article. All we know for sure is that about 100 more people went to an lgbt charity because they experienced what they believe to be a hate crime. And yet we don't even know what that means. Ultimately it was a pretty small increase in total number so whatever it was, it's also being blown out of proportion by misleading headlines. Although, I, as a Muslim, people have no right to judge us. If the majority of the religion is against gay people, then I am not. One person can make a difference. Apparently the brexit vote also coincided with a call to report hate crimes even in the event the victims felt the perpetrators wouldn't be caught. The Russian govt's homophobic agenda is definitely for other reasons than actually wanting to punish gays so badly. There's three likely situations (more hate crimes, more reportings or both) and I don't think more reportings is the most logical. I agree with @Simon: Brexit gave legitimacy to the opinions of the entire basket of deplorables: not just xenophobes and racists but also homophobes.
