Building her legacy

So I was at first kinda skeptical about Gaga not doing any real promo for PI except for radio interviews, but now that the promo has really started (between the dive bar tour, the Superbowl announcement, SNL and the carpool karaoke), I've just realised that she doesn't care about having a hit on the charts. But it doesn't mean she doesn't care about the charts or about being successful, because what I feel like she's aiming at is more than just having a hit, she's aiming at having an album success à la Beyoncé (who doesn't do well on the hot100 anymore).

It would explain why the real promo appealing to the GP is only starting when the album gets released and not the lead single: she wants the album to get critical success and commercial success in its entirety, and she doesn't quite care about her lead single. I feel like it's actually really smart, since singles are kinda forgettable and she already had many hits, so what she needs now if she wants to actually go down as a legend is to reach this Barbra Streisand kind of level with albums being praised and successful without having new hits.

Well, she built her legacy during previous eras where she was critically acclaimed before and after the album release :oprah:

I don't think she doesn't care about her lead singles, she clearly chose one of the dancy songs on the album, she could have released COME TO MAMA as lead and see us meltdown as the song chart at #99 the first week :oprah:

I don't get your point :oprah:

I didn't ask for a free ride, I only asked you to show me a real good time.

Yeah, hahaha, she & her label definitely did care a little bit abt the lead single, that's why they didnt choose a country song (A-Yo), a ballad (Million Reasons) or a Beatles-ish song (Just Another Day) as the lead. They wanted the lead to be upbeat & somewhat catchy, so they just released PI as the lead, it doesn't even fit the album, it sticks out like a sore thumb tbh.

Same for ur thoughts

This maybe won't be an album as popular as BTW or TFM  , but it could definitely make her career path more colorful and meaningful.

Lord Temptation

All the promo has been low key and back to basics. It sounds too radically different to the Gaga people remember (many fans stopped liking her during Born This Way - and that was five freaking years ago!) so I think she wants to catch people off guard. This album isn't a statement as much to proclaim "Here is the New Me" as much as it is a spirited move back to where it all began. So instead of a massive campaign she wanted something understated, unfiltered and raw. Mark my words Joanne will be a sleeper hit that will linger in the charts for the next few years.

When the album release date was announced so close to the lead it was obvious this would be a campaign targeted at album promo.
