Same thing happened when #artRAVESanDiego went Top 10 trending back in 2014... I was like "OMG my city's impact!!!" then I realized the rest of the US was asleep, lol.

Is there that big of a time difference in the US?

When you consider the population density across the country, yes. There are 4 time zones: East coast, Midwest, Mountain and West coast (excluding Hawaii).

The "right side" = East coast and Midwest, which make up the vast majority of the country.

Then you have the Mountain time zone, which has very few folks, in the scheme of things.

Then finally, West coast. Which is very small compared to East coast + Midwest. But it's still a large population.

So yes, when it's 1am on the West coast you can guarantee the rest of the US is in bed. It's between 3-4am for most of the country right now.
