So our government should act in the same way as criminals? Strange argument. There is no reason why we can't reform our prisons and abandon capital punishment.

China, Iran, Sudi Arabia, Iraq, The United States, those are the countries with the highest number of state executions. Is that a list of nations you wish to be a part of? Probably not.

There was no argument in my post, it was just an observation.

In my opinion capital punishment had always been unofficially used in America, people are just ignoring it like they ignore everything else.

I can't say I really understand the point you are trying to make.

Capital punishment is an act of violent revenge. It's particularity disgusting when its used against criminals with mental health issues, like the two men you cited.

What's wrong with a little violent revenge? gaycat.png

But, no. It's not revenge, it's justice, and public safety. What is the point in keeping people like that in a Supermax until they reach a ripe old age?

re·venge - the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong suffered at their hand

Even if you believe capital punishment is a just punishment it is still very much an act of revenge, and I'd rather my government not be in the business of revenge.

If an individual is a threat to our society the ethical course of actions is to remove them from our society by placing them in prison, not by murdering them like they were a rabid dog.

Uh... putting them in prison for life is also revenge of a most unpleasant kind... :/

Murder is defined as an unlawful killing, so technically these people aren't being murdered ;) but yep, I would compare some of the serial killer psychos to rabid dogs.

If you believe we should treat the mentally ill the same way we treat rabid dogs than there is no point in continuing the conversation. We don't have a disagreement about the ethical responsibility of our justice system, we just have vastly different sets of morals.

They are not mentally ill!

People who are certified insane do not get the death penalty. They go to institutions. Just because someone murders people doesn't make them insane.

You know the old chestnut, "everyone has some kind of psychological disorder".

I believe every human should be treated humanely, you believe some humans should be treated like animals.

I believe Old Yeller should be treated better than Jeffrey Dahmer and his ilk, yes.

I don't think this discussion will go anywhere positive, so I'm out.
