A family in deep poverty would rather spend 10 pesos (roughly $0.20) for cheap solvents because they'd numb the hunger the whole day instead of food which will only get them probably a small cup of rice -OR- two-four pieces of bread.

I'm not condoning use of drugs but the approach in eradicating this is not as black and white as many people think. Addiction is also a mental health issue, something very lacking in support in the Philippines.

Additionally, most of those killed are the expendable mules of the drug lords, not the bigshot perpetrators themselves.

i think in other cases drug market competition are into the some of the killings, it would really be unfair for him to blame to all of the killings. Extrajudicial killings were already present during the last President and President Noy Noy Aquino was obviously the primary suspect of the Mamasapano Masacre tho.

I think the situation in the Philippines and in the US is completely different so you cant compare him to Trump. He is insensitive to compare himself to Hitler but then again,  hitler's presence was not really felt there and they are more wary of the Japanese in WWII. 

It's like a politician trying to end the drug war in Mexico.  You know it will be bloody and there will be casualties on both sides and yet he is the only one who is doing something about it. Other politicians have just ignored it as a problem too big to handle and decided to be the likeable one who tackles easy problems. 

Im not saying I approve of those deaths but we dont really know what is happening there. WE all want to follow the nice judicial process and being kind and civil but If that doesnt work,  what do you do? You just let them sell drugs?  You continue to ignore them? When i think about it in that way, its such a hard question to answer. 

We had a similar discussion in my critical thinking class before. It really isnt black or white.

I voted for Miriam and Duterte was my second choice. Imagine if Miriam won, Robredo will be our president now and we'll have another incompetent as a president. Yes Duterte's statements are scary but tbh, it doesn't affect me and I don't care. I know that sounds so wrong in so many levels but rehab is free and if you're an addict and you choose to not give yourself up, death is coming buddy. I am torn but as long as innocents aren't harmed, I'm still going to keep quiet.

Ah, Philippines - where the citizens dismiss a complicated problem such as drug abuse as something that is easily solved ('Free rehab'? Honey, where? Do you even have the facilities and budget for that? Y'all don't even have enough public schools, hospitals, your transportation is basically **** - what are you talking about?) by totally overlooking human rights, and vote for incompetent leaders only to think that whatever these politicians decide to do or say doesn't affect them. I think that the Philippines is in peril not because of this mess of a president, but because of its citizens who are apathetic and - let's be honest - fail to think.

What are you even on about. When the killings began, the addicts can surrender themselves to their respective barangay halls to get treatment. Believe it or not, free rehab centers are a thing here. These people have a choice to better themselves. Also, I think you're not taking into consideration some facts stated by other members in this thread. Most of the killings aren't done by the government, they're done by the druglords who are afraid that their customers and underlings would rat them out. Also, extrajudicial killings have been a thing (unfortunately), since Corazon Aquino's rule which makes it quite ironic that she's hailed as the mother of democracy and human rights of the Philippines. Yes, Duterte's statements are crass but he isn't harming innocents nor political enemies (which the past administrations did without batting an eye). He's harming anyone advocating drug abuse. I'm not saying this is ideal but you have to pick from two evils.

Your post really rubs me the wrong way. Do you even live here? You can certainly put your point across without insulting my country and my people. If you're a Filipino, I think you can agree that our economy have been steadily on the rise and things are getting slightly better. If you aren't, get your head out of your ass and stop spewing stupidity on things you know nothing about. I am apathetic, I agree and I guess I'm sorry for that (?) But I in no means 'failed to think'. I'm the most logical person you will ever meet and bro, there's a lot of us here.
