Tony's influence on Perfect Illusion?

I'm being completely serious! And before you drag me, remember I freaking love PI.

But, I've been thinking about this for a while...One of the most startling quotes I ever heard from Tony was this (and I'm paraphrasing)... "Music is either good, or it's not. Debating the quality of a song is pointless, because it's not subjective. It's either well written, or it isn't." [would love it if someone can find the actual quote!]

What does this have to do with Perfect Illusion? I feel like PI is an extremely well written song... it's very, very tight. I'm no musician, but I would venture to guess it's a "musician's" pop song. But it's not a "trendy" song. And it's missing many of the gimmicky/non-musical "hooks" that make for a massive radio hit.

I feel like, after working with Tony, Gaga now is only interested in making songs that are truly quality from an objective standpoint. But that also may mean far fewer radio hits.

(PS, I'm not trying to start yet another 20 page war debating whether PI is good or not, but more of a dialogue around Tony's influence on Gaga's pop music)

Unfortunately, it will still happen. rLycYWN.gif

Regarding your original post, I believe ARTPOP is the influence on Perfect Illusion. She mentioned it a few times in interviews that she "learned a lot from ARTPOP". :noparty: Tony might play a part in this too actually. This was interesting to read, as usual. :classy:

How come every time there's a question about Perfect Illusion, the first reply alway sounds like this?

"Perfect Illusion sounds like trash"

REALITY

That's a really interesting quote. I don't think there's really such thing as having objectively good music, because no matter what, someone will always disagree with it—that just doesn't make sense to me.

I don't think Tony himself was really any sort of inspiration, but I do think that that philosophy of just making music that you love and that you enjoy is something that certainly inspired her for the Joanne era.

I'm not sure if Tony is right here. I think what he is trying to imply is that regardless of whether you like a song or not there is no debating the quality of it- that the craftsmanship of a song can always be seen from a purely objective viewpoint.

But I wouldn't agree with that at all- it has everything to do with perspective and heavily dependent on who is listening to it. Some of us may argue that Bad Romance is a pop masterpiece whose structure defined a precedent for many more pop songs to come, but to p̶e̶o̶p̶l̶e̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶n̶o̶ ̶t̶a̶s̶t̶e̶  others it's a trashy song with nonsense lyrics- and that is ok.

You know what they say about one man's junk is another's treasure and I think the same applies to music.
