I think that was our first hint at Joanne. Given that ARTPOP was created in such a dark period of the life, she knew and anticipated its underperformance and the rush-release of both her lead single & the album so she planned ahead. The want and NEED to offer her fans a SHOW have driven her to sign a contract with Apple this year. The song title, the message, the chart positions.. they're all a Perfect Illusion. The song's sales are faked as being lower than normal to recreate the beginning of the ARTPOP era through that Applause performance. Joanne will be what ARTPOP should have been: the sound of the future. The combination of ART and POP through love and creativity. A reverse warholian expedition. If we make up excuses for Gaga or try to convince ourselves that we like the song she'll keep going into that direction. That said, i wonder if she really anted to make this record since she was so into acting lately. She even said she considered herself more an actress than a singer.
