Or so they say If you look at the cover art for all five of Gaga's albums, you'll notice that Joanne is the only one where she isn't giving us eye contact. The Fame: Gaga's eyes are covered with large black sunglasses. She can see us but we can't look into her eyes. [Insert deep commentary on fame here that you've all heard a thousand times ]. In Gaga's own words: "The Fame is not about who you are—it's about how everybody wants to know who you are." We all want to know who 'the real Lady Gaga' is, but she chooses to maintain a sense of mystery and not reveal herself to us at this point in her career. The Fame Monster: Gaga gives us a peek behind the sunglasses, but she's still very much 'mysterious'. Her head hides under a giant wig, and she's hiding her own mouth with her collar. She wants to give us access into her soul but at the same time, she's stopping herself from revealing too much. The songs on the album seem to go along with this, and reflect a general theme of being unable to face one's fears/wanting to avoid moments of vulnerability ("She's got both hands in her pocket...And she won't look at you...Don't call my name" "Stop callin', stop callin'...I don't wanna think any more" "I wanna dance in the dark") Born This Way: This is the first album cover where we can actually see her whole face (attached to a motorbike ). Her eyes AND mouth are open. The windows and doors to her soul are open to the public; she's ready to deliver her most personal album yet. The album's theme's include individualism, self-empowerment and freedom; this is Gaga saying "I was Born This Way b*tch! I'm as free as my hair! I'm a lion; hear me Roar! (by Katy Perry)" ARTPOP: Gaga's eyes are literally lifeless (Koons made them out of white plaster). She's fully nude and cupping her ta ta's. She almost looks...uncomfortable, and forced. She's laid herself bare for the world to see (do what you want with my body! I live for the applause!) but she doesn't look fully 'present'. Joanne: This is the first cover art where Gaga isn't wearing heavy makeup or crazy wigs. It's just her and a pink hat. She looks completely natural and comfortable in her own skin, but now she chooses to look away from us In fact, she's looking slightly upwards, as if towards some higher truth. Even in the Perfect Illusion single cover (if you look really closely), Gaga's eyes are looking to the side. What does this all mean? She loves us so so so so much. I mean when ever she sees us waiting outside of radio stations or hotels or wherever, she's always excited to give us hugs and a few kisses. She's says "I love you" to us without any prompting usually. We'll always be a huge part of her (she has the monster paw, little monsters, and mother monster permanently tattooed on her body) but maybe this album is more "for her" so to speak than for us? Not to say she doesn't love us but maybe this album is more for her on a different level than the previous albums. If that makes any sense I love you monsters.
