I dunno, I think you are reading too much into it.... the song is about falling in love with someone who is not all that you though they were, because you fell for an act rather than the real person. It has happened to me recently, so I can totally relate to it.

For anyone who has written a song, there starts a theme and a backbone for the story. As the dust settles, you start to realize other parts that connect and make it take shape, as well as more universal/relatable. I think Troy was the backbone, the initial drive of the lyrics. Then, as she shared the song with Ronson (or one of the other co-creators) maybe he illuminated his reflection on it: that it could reflect social media, dating, etc. and that's the story she runs with. Not because it isn't true, but because, as she said, she's not about calling anybody out. But come on, the emotion and venom in the song, and you're gonna convince yourself it's not about a person. Or rage aimed at a situation. Could she really have such feelings for app culture?
