I was in Berlin whole August and it wasn't dark before 22. And if you are in Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg or Mitte, there is usually a lot of young people and a lot festivals. I was in Berlin in July and yeah, of course it was sunny and hot, I mean that from September-October till April-May the hours of sun are very limited. I loved Mitte, Charlottenburg, and basically the whole city, it's very modern and the people is nice, although there are many zones that look unfinished and deserted, but when I took the S-Bahn train to Potsdam and Oranienburg I saw the suburbs and they were like the ones in Paris or worse.

My impression is Germany is a great country to visit and a nice place to live in but giving the economical differences right now between Spain and Germany I expected a much bigger lifestyle  I was honestly surprised to see how Germany has helped so much other countries economically when in their own capital, in the middle of the town there are many unfinished buildings and empty terrains, and trains part the city when that would be unthinkable here in Madrid for example.

Omg what a wonderfull story!!! Where did you lived in Amsterdam? I live in Utrecht thats like 20 minutes with train. We are indeed very open minded people with a lot of respect to each other, a lot of cultures in one country

My host family lived near the university of Amsterdam. They had a dog that I would take for walks at night on the university campus. I always loved the water features they have on campus. So gorgeous. I'm really short and I'll never forget when they picked me up at the airport, the middle daughter who was 7 looked at me and was like "why are you so short? Did your mom not feed you enough spinach so you could grow big and strong?" Lol cutest thing ever.

Because Spain is probably closer and one of Europes most popular place to visit if you need sun and nice weather.

You shouldn't forget that Berlin was divided not long ago. And it already changed a lot! 

You won't see all that in cities I already mentioned who are in the West. (Hamburg, Munich, Bonn, Düsseldorf). Berlin is in generally really poor compared to other capitals. Though that is changing as well since many people move to Berlin and it's the place where all the start ups happening in Europe! 

I personally loved Madrid, when I was there btw! Very beautiful city

Looking forward to visit Germany again, I heard Lufthansa is interested in flying from my closest airport to Munich and Frankfurt  I want to visit Neuschwanstein Schloss, it looks gorgeous!

And btw I'm not from Madrid, I'm actually from Galicia in northwest Spain where the weather is usually rainy lol, I was just putting Madrid as an example.

That's cool! Munich is amazing! I loved it there!

Oh I never been that much north. When I lived in Spain I was in Castilla-la-Mancha in 600 people village

honey Berlin is just one of 16 federal capitals of Germany and just the policital capital, it's not a royal capital like Madrid, Berlin itself receives state subsidies from Western Germany,

it is well known throughout Central Europe that Berlin is a poor city and the city's slogan even was "Arm aber sexy" (Poor, and despite being poor sexy nonetheless" during the last decade. The city never promised anyone to be luxurious, it was destroyed in World Wars

if you wanna see a rich Germany city, go to Hamburg, Düsseldorf or Munich

Personally, I liked Berlin and felt it was overwhelming, I think it's a cosmopolitan city

 

Also don't forget Madrid was something like the capital centre of the global Hispanic World for centuries while Berlin is a young capital

Honestly, it's funny. I've been to NY and London, but Amsterdam is one of the few cities I want to visit again. I know how it feels when people stan for your country, and you first think "Why? " so I can understand where you're coming from.

Really, I've been to NY en London too. And I'm just 2 weeks back from LA, San Francisco and Las Vegas but I almost like all of these cities better than Amsterdam. Maybe because I've seen Amsterdam much often but to me the people are not so friendly. You don't have a great skyline or noteworthy buildings. I get that for foreigners it can be attractive, the canals, the cute houses, the Mary Jane, etc. but to me as a Dutch guy that is very common. When you visit NY the buildings, flashing lights, shows, the people, the famous monuments make a big impression, at least to me. Amsterdam is more "boring".

The flashing lights, the famous monuments, the people are common for us too. I'm not a New Yorker, but I'm from Toronto. I'm used to the big city life by now. I remember going on a trip to New York a few years ago, and my first impression was "meh". It's not as exciting as TV makes it to be, but it's not bad either. I know that people who live in those cities don't necessary love the places, cause to them, it's just a place to work and sleep. Every single day, we see skyscrapers, taxies, subway cars and business men. Unless you have a lot of money and time to explore, life in the city is not so glamorous every day.

I like the more laid back feeling in Amsterdam, and what it has to offer. The bike culture is huge to me, because you can't bike around here without risk of getting hit (and all drivers pretty much hate you). If you ride a bike, you share the road with the cars instead of having your own road like in Germany or Netherlands. 

I guess overall, North America and Europe has a big contrast in my opinion. Tourist perspective is always different than a local perspective, and everything looks amazing as a tourist
