'Gaga' was the Perfect Illusion

So I have been thinking about the motivations behind Gaga releasing PI as the first single and about how she broke with her previous manager when ARTPOP started but that doesn't mean she really expressed her feelings about that situation in the form of music as she has in many key songs of her career.  Additionally, I thought of the perceptions people had during ARTPOP about how perhaps the character 'Gaga' was going to be shed because of how the media expressed an exhaustion with her in way and we all remarked how she was doing 'normal' things.  :saladga:

In the Facebook Live video I saw her making a point to try to say how she was normal, just a normal person and trying to normalize the feeling of just jamming with other band members.  For me this really strongly puts Stefani in my head as the album title, with Perfect Illusion actually being the release she is having from both her previous manager and making subtle commentary about how exacerbating the character of Gaga was what she thought would keep things going. :wtfga:

She talks about pressure taking its toll, which references how her career is having new criticism and she's trying to gain a grasp of what she had. :firega:

As she screams it wasn't love I almost feel a sense of her being upset because she was made to feel that playing this perfect illusion of a pop star that had to always be on top of her game didn't create the relationship she thought she had with her manager.  She mistook his love of her success for real love and being depicted in public with him or others that abandoned her wasn't her with real friends but opportunists. :what:

The drugs to amphetamine, still feeling the blow, and modern ecstasy sounds like a description of the high she felt being this perfect image because it was such a rush how she skyrocketed to success.  Saying modern ecstasy sounds like the reference to social media in how she once had the most followers on Twitter and how attention online is something craved by many people in this modern age.  :fthis:

Since then, she has learned a lot and spoken a lot about how she doesn't care about the success because she got to a point where maybe she realized she was addicted to the fame she received for what she did, maybe even forgetting that her voice and focused talent was enough from the start.  I think during the C2C era she spent that time trying to focus more on what made her happy even if the high of the fame was so exhilarating and began to appreciating her talents for where they were at, trying new things because she wanted to and not so much for the opinion of others. :laughga:

This is the first single off the album and knowing the Gags and how she said each song is autobiographical in a way, there has to be more meaning than just making a commentary on the highlight reels we all have like Instagram and Snapchat.  So if this song would have to attempt to speak to at least one thing she has learned about herself since her last pop album release.  When she comments on her music video just being her singing and all these other notions of her being just her plain self and how she often speaks her mind in relation to the single era she is in, that is the other message I think she is trying to convey with PI. :cryga:

Boom. That was fun to write hahaha thanks for reading. I'm ready for my Reach for the Stars.gif :icega:

I think the MV will be more than the simple performance y'all are thinking about.

Since ecstasy can be defined as "an overwhelming feeling of great happiness or joyful excitement," I would say modern ecstasy is the feeling of excitement people experience through social media and the sensation of followership or being viral.

Yes this is the vibe I've been getting since she talked about how people see her as an illusion

Thank you for a topic that's actually well thought-out and worth reading :)  I personally believe that Gaga herself isn't necessarily a character, but an ever-changing expression of who she is. I think you are right about the 'modern ecstasy' she must've felt at the top of her game.

PI is a very genuine artistic statement. I think it's super refreshing that she has been able to "remove fame" from the equation while she's in the studio - especially because I think that's where ARTPOP was lacking - a relatability that her previous albums had. Now, I think she's back in touch with who SHE is and who GAGA is and that LG5 will connect with people on a really deep level.

Aww thank you!  And I agree with you in when you say that Gaga isn't necessarily a character.  If anything I mean that she focused too much on the qualities of herself that the GP liked so much that she focused perhaps got lost trying to continually please that taste people had for her to continually one-up herself when her voice was what got her recognition in the first place.

Definitely an amazing bop

I think Drake explains it well in one of his songs. About how we are infatuated with Love and "false" or Insta- Fame but we don't want relationships and we are self centered pricks who will use and abuse everyone around us.

Modern Ecstasy - Its fake, filtered and not real.
