petty 9,412
It's about Taylor. Plain and simple, I believe this was written fresh after they called it off. You can hear the sadness and emotion in her voice. The only reason she doesn't want to pin this on that situation is because she still holds hope that her and Taylor will work things out. She doesn't want to bring negative attention to their relationship, which is understandable. There's no other way to look at it. Tho I wish she'd just be honest and leave the "social media/smartphone" explanation in the garbage. The song would be soo much more relatable to listeners if she just admitted that the lyrics are solely about a breakup. this is my interpretation tbh: Trying to get control (of the relationship that is failing) Pressure's takin' it's toll (the pressures of fame, hurting the relationship) Stuck in the middle zone (stuck in between the fame and her love life) I just want you alone (just wants to be with taylor) My guessing game is strong (assumes he's not happy anymore) The second verse/choruses touches on the fact that she looks back at her relationship as an illusion. She never found someone like that and now that he's gone she wonders if he was even real. It's actually heart wrenching when i hear her sing this with such sad emotion in her voice, considering her situation
JDi 1,495
it doesn't have to be about either her love life or fans turning their back on her. it's about struggling with accepting your disillusionment with any kind of relationship that you had put your trust into. and I can easily put my trust in the universal meaning of any of her songs. just listen to that geeky-sweet earnestly neurotic stutter. she sounds too much like a child, proud and happy to explain to be making this stuff up. some of us just like to read, y'know? or is it too weird to accept the fact you're following the life of a nerdy 30 y/o hippie poet? she's got a peace sign, a Rilke quote and a smack daddy inked on her body ffs, it's only natural for her music to mean anything and nothing in particular. she's being a chaos angel that way. I fell in love with her as an artist, as a superstar, as a brave individual and much much more in 2011 during Born This Way. But I do care about her chart positions, it makes me happy to see her having hit songs which are in the charts. But I don't have this weird obsession which some people have who say ooh she isn't number 1 though she is flopping. She is selling less than Kesha or Britney so she is a flop. I just enjoy following her, we cannot control what she puts out. We cannot control the charts (to some extent), but I love following her and enjoy her discography, now I wasn't a big fan of ahs but I didn't tear it down because I know it means a lot to some fans. All I'm saying is, if you are a true fan you will always follow and support gaga, not call her names like a flop or anything like that, and not start things which trend on twitter such as the chainsmokers over party thing . To be a true fan you dont need to like every single thing she does but you shouldn't spoil it for the other fans if you don't like it. Yes sis! That's exactly what "the real fan" means! Slayer 9,227
I don't think it's about anybody in particular. It might have something to do with Troy Carter and the other various people in her life who used her and betrayed her. But she seems to imply it's about people's experiences in general. Realistically I think she wanted to write a song about how fake social media is, and she used love and relationships as a way to make it more relatable and emotional. I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!
