I think this is easily her weakest lead, even weaker than Applause.... What I like: -The key change, best part of the song tbh -The subject matter, as in what the song is about -The fact that it's not very trendy. There's no overused, Major Lazer type beats/sounds that are currently over-saturating pop music. -The chorus melody What I don't like: -Biggest thing I can't stand is the actual mix of the song. The mixing is atrocious. The way the volume levels jump up drastically between the verses and chorus makes it hard to listen to with headphones. It literally gets +5 dB louder (estimation) when she goes "It wasn't LOVE, IT WASN'T LOVE" -The production is really.... underproduced?? I'm not sure if that's the best word to describe it, but I'm actually more disappointed in Mark Ronson than I am in Gaga. I mean, this is the guy who gave us Back to Black for crying out loud!! The production is also kind of muffled (again with the horrible mix), there isn't really a lot of clear distinct sounds aside from the electric guitar in the beginning.... -Her vocals are slightly off-key in some parts. I'm sure she was probably trying to stray away from auto-tune, but I almost wish there was a little more pitch correction. -Lack of clear song structure. The song gets extremely messy after the second chorus, the bridge is really repetitive and goes on for way too long and the last 30 seconds of her monotonously shouting "IT WAS A PERFECT ILLUSION" I find annoying, not "emotive". Don't get me wrong, I love Lady Gaga. I think she's extremely talented, but if this song is anything indicative of #LG5, I'm probably not going to buy it. I just think her whole image transformation was kind of misleading, I almost wish that she would've released something a bit more.... mature? Not necessarily more jazz standards, but something that showcased her vocals and compositional skills in a better light. I don't think it's necessarily all her fault though, as I'm equally disappointed with Mark Ronson as well. MTE. That was like reading my mind bc I couldn't point out what exactly I didn't like. I just know I like the first 30 seconds, to be exact. What I think of the rest: repetitive, don't like her voice bc of the way she signs it. It actually sounds annoying to me, like, I want to change to another song. It could have been great with some pauses or build ups or something. I get that she didn't want to use auto-tune but she has a better voice than this tbh. It feels like a compromise between a pop song that wants to reach #1 but the other side breaks the deal for it. Idk hard to explain, so thanks for your words. Edit: idk why on Earth Ronson said it would sound like her voice would hug you BUT I won't give up. I won't judge the album based on the single. I just hope I can enjoy the rest of the songs.
Ashley 9,372
I honestly loved it at first listen! I was surprised. It's pure, raw, and emotional. She's holding nothing back and I love it. I've been waiting for something like this since her cover of What's Going On. On another note I'd wish we could all respect each other's opinions, maybe that's asking too much. Discussion is fine but I don't appreciate being called blind or delusional for liking a damn song. This also applies to bashing those who dislike it (but are expressing that respectfully). HANZ 4,380
it's growing on me tbh but it's still my least favorite lead single tbh My Favs = Lady Gaga, Janet Jackson, Ricky Martin, AKB48

I grew to like it. I'm not forced to, I do. It's not pathetic. 𝙸'𝚖 𝚊 𝚓𝚘𝚛𝚝𝚜 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚓𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚜𝚑𝚘𝚎𝚜 𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚍 𝚘𝚏 𝚐𝚒𝚛𝚕.
LittleBoot 27
I'm liking the rock/disco sound, her choice of collaborations and her whole rock look right now... but I find the song itself to be pretty underwhelming. I just think it falls short of her capabilities as a singer and songwriter. I don't mean to be negative, I only say that because she's one of the most talented in the business. That said, I'm still hopeful that the album will have some gems that I can get into.
whore 11,447
It depends on how you introduce yourself to the song. If you go into it expecting to hear another hit pop song, then you'll hate it. If you go into it expecting a rock-pop jam, then you'll absolutely love it. I was actually disappointed the first time I heard it, but it grew on me quick and now I'm obsessed! My critique: The song is very repetitive. It's hard to forget that the song's title is "Perfect Illusion." It needs more lyrics, which may also help in the songs length, which I find to be too short. Other than that, great song! GunninMan 1,406
For me, I personally think its Gaga's best lead single. Bad Romance, Born This Way, Applause, and Just Dance are all iconic in their own way, but only Applause and Perfect Illusion are the two that get me so hyped when listening to it. I literally rock the **** out every single time I listen to both, and PI has been on a loop since last night. I can understand some pointers that people have for it, it is a bit loud, the vocals kind of overpower the instrumental, but I actually love that factor, none of gaga's vocals, in my opinion, have been louder than the actual beat of the song, and the way her voice grits and is deeper is so sexy to me. I love everything about this song and the beginning of this era because it feels like this is the first single she has put out that is truly the root of gaga. This shows her rock n roll roots from her music tastes, and I think what she said about this album being about her being her father's daughter is so true in this song. iHype 57
It's all over the place. I just can't get into it, I can appreciate her vocals on some portions and the chorus is catchy but it's just not a great song. I am so disappointed the one who made Bad a Romance & Poker Face and the one who made Uptown Funk! worked together for half of year and this was one of the best outputs and suppose to be the undeniable hit of the record. This is so low when you think about the standards and past these two have had.
Poope MOnster 1,446
I didnt feel applause and still dont i like her every single except MTN GUY and Applause i really love PI is that tell you something?
JustinTrudeau 2,419
It's a grower for me, and I really like the new sound. It's something I'm not used to, and I knew that it would be rock-pop (which was true) I fell down the stairs once as an actor.
pink sushi 4,351
I wasn't too impressed tbh. I was expecting more of a pop song from her. Throughout the entire song I kept expecting some big dance chorus in the middle and it never happened. I wouldn't say that I hate it though. I'll keep listening to it and maybe it will grow on me.... The song has actually grown on me a lot & while I still do think it's a little messy at parts, I love it much more than I did last night.
