Benji 20,113
In my honest opinion, there's nothing wrong with the vocals but the song is so damn cringey because of the main line. "I need you more than dope" sounds pathetic, especially when you consider she is (or was) a general drug abuser and has an addictive personality. The verses paint real pain but that chorus is just horrendous.

She would never write those kind of pathetic lyrics that's why I always see "I need you more than dope -- yeah right!" part and everything makes more sense... Also comparing dope vocals with I wanna be with you vocals, there is a big difference and no one said that IWBWY is not emotional... They can't scare me, if I scare them first. She over explained ARTPOP to the heavens so I think she would have slipped it in there if she meant it that way.
Oriane 21,110
Ironic, no. She does it on purpose but it comes from her heart. She's not just like "hey let's do a drug-addict voice for fun", she does it because she wants to show her raw feelings. The only GGD member who can read / Credits to Celloo Deng for the profile pic! So Brown Eyes, Speechless, TEOG, Gypsy, TIHTY and I Wanna Be With You are not emotional enough? They can't scare me, if I scare them first.

That too, she over explained it and still so many songs are even more ironic than Dope yet she never mentions the real meaning behind it, take Donatella for example They can't scare me, if I scare them first. The use of the word 'Dope' in there sounds comical. The serious undertone and melancholy atmosphere of the song gets completely thrown out the window as soon as she sings the word 'dope'. miju 375
I don't see it as ironic at all, I get what you mean but the whole appeal of the song is how she really does sound broken and vulnerable. the vocals and some of the lyrics just paint the image of her coming down from a high and realizing she's ****ing up, I don't think she'd go as deep as she has done emotionally with this song if it was meant to spring back and be ironic at its core doseofamnesia. tumblr. com

She would stick to the IWBWY version I think. They can't scare me, if I scare them first.

The song, to me, is all about the addiction. She's addicted to this drug that she's gained so much comfort in...she just wants that one last puff before she has to kick the habit for the sake of her relationship/man. She's saying "Yes I'm addicted. Yes I need it and want it, yes it's ruining my sense of self and but let me have those quick few puffs before I have to stop because if I don't I'll lose you". It's the duplicitous nature of any addict. The knowing it's wrong and bad but the need to continue, the faux fulfillment. Edit: Yes, I actually see the irony now. I agree. I'm not sure what you mean here lol, but idk, just a quick look at the wiki page for the song and how she describes it as her most personal, confessional and vulnerable song kindve leaves me to believe it's not ironic lol but it's definitely an interesting interpretation! doseofamnesia. tumblr. com
