Born To Slay 10,996
This year the VMAs drew a tragic 6.5m viewers, the Billboard Music Awards this year pulled 9.6m viewers this year while last years AMAs pulled 11m viewers, almost twice the viewers this year at the VMAs. The VMAs were previously the second biggest music award show in America, second to the Grammys but this year shows more then ever the slip in ratings while other award shows remain consistent. Has the one time award show juggernaut lost its status as the one if the biggest nights in music?
Katsuki Bakugo 9,788
Yes because its become a "who can be more controversial" or "most unprofessional for the lols" platform. I don't watch unless my favs are in it- and this year was no exception. If All You Ever Do Is Look Down On People, You Won't Be Able To Recognize Your Own Weaknesses. Pablo 7,799
Award shows are slipping because they are all too gimmicky. I think people are starting to see how self obsessed these shows are. Don't visit my profile

pie-kun 1,765
I still think it is an important award show, otherwise it wouldn't be able to pull in the likes of people like Rihanna, Beyonce and Britney (the latter two typically do not perform just anywhere these days), but its significance is quickly fading and I do think it is facing an existential crisis. The VMAs made sense at a time when MTV had shows like TRL and Making the Video as part of its line-up, but it now just seems out of place with most of their other programming and the ratings are showing that people are losing interest even with an all-star line-up. I think it really sucks that the YouTube Music Awards were so poorly planned and managed back in 2013 because it really does seem like YouTube would be the natural successor to MTV in terms of hosting a music video award show. DemeLarell 931
Award Shows ratings are mostly determined by what the show was like the previous year. Last year the show was good but very lack luster causing many people to lose interest this year, BUT seeing how this VMAs slayed next years ratings will be higher if they play their cards right with the performers and hosts like they did this year. Seeka 12,372
MTV and its babies are suffering network decay in general, and that doesn't help matter. And most award shows have become mostly crap these years as well. They're gimmick, and are self-obsessed without being self-aware. Plus they take too long. Like, unless you have a good line-up, I'm not gonna watch. Like it takes almost four hours to watch these things in full. Bitch, I don't have time. I got novels to write and games to play.
