"The kind of music I listen to, most of you have never heard of it, and would probably never have any interest, because it's all underground artists and they're not mainstream pop celebrities." My eyes rolled so far all the way to the back of my skull. Using "mainstream" and "pop" as negatives makes me feel nauseous. "GGD would be SO much more interesting if it wasn't focused on Britney." It would be more interesting for you. Yes I agree that Gaga has more to offer than most other pop acts, but that doesn't change the fact that she is a pop act and thus is probably going to share a fanbase with other artists from that genre. What do you expect? If this site isn't "interesting" enough for you then why are you here? I'm sure there are other forums where you can discuss your pseudo-intellectual favs, continuing to get your Gaga fix on GGD whilst simply ignoring threads about artists you don't enjoy. I love music. I make and release my own music. I have a degree in music. The beauty of it lies within it's vastness and how we can all enjoy it in completely different ways, and that should be respected. While I do believe that some music has an objective level of quality, it does not come in genres. There are some great and talented mainstream pop artists - like Gaga and many others - while there are "underground" artists that are far less talented. You're asking people to embrace your tastes whilst dismissing theirs as unworthy and "garbage". High horse, much? Perfect post. I'm certain the underground pop and rock fans here wouldn't be very happy if a classical or jazz fan came onto their forums and said "This one act is okay, but the rest of your music taste is garbage. The structures are simplistic, the harmonies unambitious, the rhythms parochial, and the lyrics pathetic teenage whining. You should open your minds and listen to music that's accomplished from a formal standpoint instead of lapping up every suburbanite with a guitar and 'soul.'" That would be obnoxious, patronizing, and missing the point on ten different levels. You don't listen to rock because you are intellectually thrilled by the clever way they subvert the rules of counterpoint; you listen to rock because you're struck by the raw feeling of the music or the lyrics. For some reason, everyone refuses to lend pop music this basic sort of understanding. Also, for everyone patting themselves on the back here... I've actually had a couple of people who were not mainstream pop fans at all, including a devoted metalhead, tell me they couldn't stand any pop star... except Katy Perry. No, I don't understand it either, but the "this one's okay" phenomenon isn't unique to Gaga. We're just on a Gaga forum and are therefore more likely to remember when someone praises Gaga as opposed to her contemporaries.

That's a very good way of seeing it that I hadn't even thought of before but completely makes sense. And yes one of my good friends in school was a metalhead, and the only pop star he liked was Ke$ha... This was around 2010 when Tik Tok was everywhere. He thought Gaga was talentless lol. I had considered including her in my list, but I figured most of you had heard of her and decided to include music that isn't that mainstream - realizing that yes, Bat for Lashes & Lykke Li are fairly mainstream but not nearly as popular. I'm pretty much the same, there's something particular about Gaga that captivates me. The only other 'pop' star that appeals to me is Sia. I'm glad Sia was mentioned on this thread. She's pretty amazing. She's a genuine artist and I find myself really liking some of her songs (not all of her music) but she's an impressive creative force, for sure. I've seen her perform several times and met her. She's tiny, adorable and an incredible vocalist / performer.

ThatAsianGuy 2,365
Me Too. I love Rock Music but I found a way to love Gaga cause she does rock too. What important is we support her regardless if we like her music or not cause she's doing a lot of effort to bring new music to us. Who knows one day she'll do other genres. Time will tell

There are some great and talented mainstream pop artists - like Gaga and many others - while there are "underground" artists that are far less talented. You're asking people to embrace your tastes whilst dismissing theirs as unworthy and "garbage". High horse, much? Honestly, I really don't care. Why? Well, mainstream pop music is force-fed to mainstream culture. We are literally INUNDATED with celebrity culture, the latest crap from Britney or Rihanna or Katy Perry, it's played in every store we go to, we are forced to endure listening to 80s Pop Music while we are buying groceries, everywhere we go online (or offline) celebrity pop music is pushed in our faces. LITERALLY. BARF. BARF. BARF. Seriously. Meanwhile THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of independent, underground musicians struggle to make enough money to pay their rent and buy groceries. They struggle to make enough money to put together their next album. They crash on friend's floors while they go on tour. They pour their hearts and souls and sweat and blood into making music THAT IS REAL. And Maybe after 5 years they start making enough money to actually pay their rent from their art and passion. After years of struggling and suffering and barely making it. And these people make INCREDIBLE music. Where is the exposure to these incredible artists in the mainstream culture? NOWHERE. Why? Because the music industry LOST ITS SOUL a long time ago. They want to support artists / musicians / performers who are the equivalent of the latest blockbuster movie. They want performers (like Britney Spears & Beyonce & Katy Perry) who are the equivalent of the latest Marvel action movie, who are going to rake in millions of dollars. It's all about money. It's not about art, it's not about soul, and frankly they don't care at all how it's affecting people subconsciously or energetically. Music AFFECTS us. And so we are swimming in a vast sea of popular culture that is being forced down our throats, while real musicians and artists are struggling and no longer get picked up by the music industry and supported like they would have back in the 60s, 70s and 80s. The peak of pop music was in the 80s, when there was a REAL DIVERSITY of artists who were employed and supported by the music industry. Now, you've got to do it yourself. And probably work a real job too.
djBuffoon 12,120
Same. Many people (here and elsewhere) will try to maintain that Gaga is no different than the rest of the pop girls, but here's the thing: 98% of what I hear from them is decent, or even very good, but it sounds like the product of an assembly line. There's no personality, no revealing nuances. Anyone could have written them, and there's no way to distinguish it from everything else. But even at her most fun and playful (someone tried, unsuccessfully, to shade the lyrics to "Sexxx Dreams" and "Boysx3") Gaga's songs sound like the work of a prodigious songwriter. Her heart. There is a vast reservoir of beauty, creativity, love and free-spiritedness in Gaga that has held my attention since the first moment. Who actually are you to comment on that though? Unless you've personally met with and discussed at lengths, other pop stars artistry and creative drive, you have absolutely no right to imply they are inferior. I can't stand the types of people that think other genres of music are more artistically correct (for want of a better word), why? Because they're not famous? Because they use real instruments and not computer synths? Listen to what you like, there's no need to judge any of the other music genre.
