And then in a matter of a few minutes he ruins his life forever, clearly without his full consciousness. Just because he didn't have a criminal record doesn't mean he was a good kid. And anyway, having to watch your SO get murdered and then mutilated while you're next is absolutely horrifying. It depends on whether you attribute more value to hopeful potential or an established life, but personally, I feel it's more devastating that an innocent family died over this.
