So I have been truly obsessed with Diane Warren for over 20 years now... long before she became part of the Lady Gaga inner circle, she has been one of my pop music idols. She is easily among my top 10 favorite songwriters of all time.

Anyway, last night I was rocking out to one of my all time favorite Diane Warren songs... the amazing 80's rock ballad "Look Away" by Chicago... Friends, take a moment and listen to the brilliance! This is one fine pop tune.

But then, I noticed the next video on YouTube was a recording of Diane Warren singing this song herself!!! Super rare! Diane is not a vocalist, so seeing her perform like this is not something we see every day. Not only does she perform "Look Away" but she performs another classic "I Get Weak" (recorded by Belinda Carlisle of The GoGo's) right after it.

I am so happy I found this video!! Diane is truly one of the greats.

And this performance is at the (very small, but historic) Wiltern Theatre in downtown LA! I saw Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett perform here for their post-Grammy's celebration concert back in 2015. It's surreal to watch this Diane clip from 1988 and then think that 27 years later I would see Gaga perform on the exact same stage.

One of my favorite Diane moments was during the TIHTY promo era and she CBS news cameras into her songwriting room... which is a DISASTER... but also a living time capsule of pop music history. She refuses to clean it up out of superstition!

You can still spot vintage pics of Cher and Taylor Dayne!!

I love this woman.

Another fun fact about Diane... she wrote Milli Vanilli's biggest hit, "Blame It On the Rain"... Yes, Milli Vanilli only won their Grammy because of Diane Warren!

...which makes it even funnier that she "Liked" this Tweet of the a Milli Vanilli meme shading Melania Trump for stealing Michelle Obama's speech!

Yes, more gems found while investigating Diane's Twitter activity, lol....

However...

Diane is about more than just shady memes. She is about the music. She did her best to "right the wrong" of participating in this mess. When Milli Vanilli was exposed, Diane went completely out of her way to help the REAL musicians/vocalists record a follow-up album of their own.

Diane only wrote ONE SONG for the first Milli Vanilli (the aforementioned #1 "Blame It On the Rain"). But when the REAL artists behind Milli Vanilli decided to release an album, she gave them 4 songs. I love her for this!

I've always known this was a massive hit, but I never realized how big until just now... This was the #4 biggest hit of 1988 in the US according to Billboard. No wonder I love it so much!

As long as I'm stanning endlessly for Diane, I may as well keep going...

Before we had the Rio Olympic anthem "Rise" by KP:

...we had "Reach" by Gloria Estefan for Atlanta's 1996 Olympics --- written by Diane (and a much better song, thank you).

By the way....

Gloria Estefan's "Reach" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the ceremony in 1997 but lost out to Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart" also written by Diane Warren.

Also, in case you didn't notice... I posted this clip tonight because it's been exactly 20 years since this moment! 1996 Olympics in Atlanta with soundtrack by Diane Warren.
