Also, it's easy to see how this could be used as propaganda within ISIL; the boy has now become yet another martyr, another faithful jihadist fell by the hands of his own infidel grandfather. 

Glad to see there is at least one member that hasn't lost all his senses.

It's not about sympathizing with ISIS.

It's about not celebrating death. It's about holding the moral high ground by displaying compassion and respect for life at a time when it is difficult to do so. It's about over riding that violent little voice in our brains left over from our Chimpanzee ancestors.

You can focus on how they should have had a family sit down, sing Kumbaya, and take away his video game privileges for a week, and I will focus on how they DID THE RIGHT THING, and not only the right thing, but the ONLY thing they could have done.  I'm sure for them it was a tragic, desperate circumstance, but you can focus on standing in a prayer circle and I will support the actions that these people were forced to make!!!

I suspect much of the miscomprehension of my position is due to my very technical use of terms relating to "morality". According to Kant,  there are categorical imperatives by which one must comply. To kill another is, under his system, necessarily immoral, regardless of circumstance. Telling white lies, lying to save someone's life and killing in self defence are all, by his system, immoral. Alternatively, one might subscribe to utilitarianism and argue that killing one to save many is moral, but that's a system of ethics that has gone out of favour within academia for several decades now (whereas Kantianism and neo-Kantianism are experiencing a renaissance of sorts). 

I think this discussion about morality--which, though fascinating, does not belong on a Gaga fan forum--has clouded the points I was trying to make in my original post. I was expressing disbelief that the fans of an artist whose career has been defined by spreading love appear to be cheering on blindly the death of a boy, and pointing out that this killing could be used as a recruiting tool by ISIL; I don't think either point is particularly controversial or worthy of debate, but should you wish to tell me how wrong I am, feel free to do so without resorting to ad hominem attacks

Kant's lunacy is beside the point, you can't sit down and discuss categorical imperatives when your grandson has beaten your daughter, his mother, to a pulp for disrespecting the local authority , ISIS, within one of the main ISIS strongholds
