Björk is an avant garde artist, she doesn't make music for the masses. You have to make an effort to get into her music while most people are only looking for radio friendly bops. Metacritic means very little in the grand scheme of things but in Madonna's case, her most acclaimed albums are all pre-metacritic and even at that her scores are higher than most other female pop stars (Beyonce being the obvious major exception but nobody would doubt the quality of her work ).
