Congrats to all the dumb people that supported him, now you will have to wait for him to die of old age until to make some democratic progress and God knows what he'll do with Turkey by that time. From what I gather, the Turkish constitution is based on secularism (i.e. the separation of religion and government). Erdogan keeps eroding this and passing laws to make Turkey more Islamic and slowly dismantling the rule of law (the idea that no person is above the law and that all are answerable to it- one of the key principles of democracy) and has been shifting the constitution all over the place to give more powers to himself The military coup, which seems to have only been a fraction of the military, attempted to overthrow the Islamist government in order to defend secularism, human rights, democracy etc This appeared to have now failed, and Erdogan seems to be about to make his secular opponents disappear Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Well that's it. lol The turkish army is supposed to protect the democracy and not allow religious crazies to take over all the power in their country. Thanks. I was on a live Facebook stream and the comments were messy af, so I had no clue what was going on... So this coup was a good thing then? I wonder that the people of Turkey think of this. Turkey seems split. Erdogan was democratically elected after all. Lots of support from pro-Islam individuals. I'd imagine pro-secularism people are more inclined to stay hopefully quiet. I managed to reach a friend that lives in Istanbul she found the whole situation odd, and strangely presenting Erdogan as "savior". I don't know it's weird, There is this theory but also another one that it's some military that are against Erdogan and took the initiative for the coup... it's complex, I guess we have to wait and see but in any case I am pretty sure we won't really know the truth.. My parents are in Turkey right now, on vacation. The military has been treating them and everyone else at their place terribly.
