This is what happens every election cycle. If you had followed more than one, you would know that. This is also what happens when a candidate is playing on the fears of citizens...fears that keep increasing. When people are scared, they go towards authoritarian figures for leaders. If Romeny was ahead in their polling it shows a skew towards older voters and not the total general electorate. Younger voters don't really take part in polls.
