What a morning. I stayed up till 3:45 last night watching this and left when Leave was leading by over 200k. Still had faint hope as there was still 200+ results to come through and I hoped it might go the way of the Scottish referendum, but was shocked to discover that we'd left and that the gap was so small. You always hope that whatever decision made will involve a big gap. When it's a small percentage of a difference, there's going to be so much anger and hostility and it'll mean there'll be more votes to come in the future, more obsession with politics, more hassle. No sooner has I come down this morning and say one statement in response to Nicola Sturgeon's claim that it's obvious what the Scottish mean by voting Remain and my dad tries to tell me that I've got it wrong (even though we're all on the same side in my house) despite him misinterpreting what I said and before I know it, my mum and I are shouting at him, I'm in floods of tears and I haven't even so much as had my morning pee yet. Truly, this Brexit vote has brought joy and harmony into the world. I hope you're happy, Leavers.

So, yeah, back to Nicola Sturgeon's comments. According to her, it is "undemocratic" that every Scottish constituency voted Remain but are forced into a decision that they don't want and that it is "obvious" that Scotland is strongly considering a move towards independence because of it. I never wanted to chuck something at a tv more in my entire life. Whether she likes it or not, Scotland is a part of the UK, so there is nothing undemocratic about Scotland as a whole being against the verdict because democracy isn't about getting what you want, it's about getting the chance to get what you want but with no guarantee, which is what happened. Secondly, there is no way of knowing what the reasoning behind choosing to remain was for every Scottish voter. Yes, the SNP were encouraging people to remain but people can have different reasons for staying. Myself and everyone I was close to voted No in the referendum and yet, we all voted Remain in this referendum. My aunt actually said: "The only thing that puts me off is the fact that Nicola's telling us to remain as well." But at the end of the day, you have your own mind and are allowed to vote for your own reasons. Who are the SNP to think that they can see into our heads. Yes, while there is a strong connection between No voters also voting Remain, I think the results showed you that a lot of Yes voters wanted to Remain as well, which must mean we have different reasons for our decisions and it has nothing to do with the Scottish referendum at all! 2 different issues, 2 different reasons. No correlation. To think that the Remain vote of every No voter translated into "pro independence" in the SNP's eyes makes me want to start to a riot bearing placards reading: "There's no 'obvious' about it." In Scotland, there was a difference of less than 600k between Leave and Remain. There was a s**tton of people who voted Remain, yes, but an equal s***ton who voted Leave. I notice how, post-referendum, the SNP made it clear that just because almost every constituency voted No overall, we shouldn't let that fool us and that there was hundreds of thousands who voted Yes and some areas were extremely close...but this time, there's no mention of the same thing when its gone their way. Even as a No voter, I wasn't in denial about the result of the Scottish referendum. It was a verdict too close for comfort and it was clear that loads of people would be very angry with the result and it wasn't a clear-cut decision by any means. But all I see from the SNP now is denial - they want to believe literally the whole of Scotland voted a certain way and that's all about it, we all believe in the same thing, no room for interpretation. Which really shows their true colours. You know, as crackpot as Donald Trump is, he did say something that I agree with when he was asked about the possibility of another Scottish referendum. He said that the last time caused so much hostility and it was a bad time and he doesn't know if the people want to go through that again. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. But then he talks about how great it is that Britain took back its country and its borders and he's lost me again.

Oh, and don't try to leave, Northern Ireland. How on earth are you going to manage on your own? Scotland's bigger than you and I don't have faith in its ability to be independent - what hope do you have? Jesus, a break-up of one institution and it sets everybody off waving the nationalism flag. This is just devastating. This is not the Britain I know. Nowadays, countries uniting and staying strong together is what makes us flourish. Every country is now a melting pot of nationalities, races, languages, religions, etc. We can't afford to break up and isolate ourselves now that we've established ourselves the way we have. Respecting one another's differences and working together is the only way the world can be secure, financially and physically. Thinking that you know best and are better off on your own is no use when you're a small island with an over-flowing population.

All we can hope now is that something positive comes out of all this, that we are proved wrong. But for now, things are looking really bleak and regrets are sinking in, the realisation that this vote was foisted on us much too soon and we weren't educated enough about the facts and consequences of leaving. One thing's from sure, I am "politicked out." I am DONE with this constant voting for this, that and the next thing. I am sick of how our people are turning against one another and starting to view each other as enemies when we live in the same place. This country is on the verge of being torn apart and it's devastating. Why are fighting? We have it so much better than other countries, where there's wars happening. What the hell do we have to complain about? Do you know what I would love? A referendum asking: "Do you want any more referendums within your lifetime?" Guaranteed NO would sweep the board.

Many students are profiting from Article 18 of the TFEU, which says that all member states are prohibited to discriminate on the basis of nationality within the EU. This means that any EU student pays the same tuition fees as the resident students of this country. This may seem obvious, but it actually isn’t: right now, UK and EU students pay £9,000 for one year of studying in Oxford or Cambridge; for non-EU students, this could be up to £30,000/year! Therefore, the tuition fees of EU students studying in the UK could increase significantly if the British universities are no longer bound by this non-discriminatory clause.

Other than this, chances are that the UK will also withdraw from the Schengen Treaty, which allows free movement of people and goods within the EU. In practice, this means that after a ‘Brexit’ students would have to get a ‘Tier 4 studentvisa’ in order to be able to study in the UK. Besides the £322 visa itself, you will also have to pay a ‘healthcare surcharge’, which, currently, for a US national is £525. There are also several eligibility requirements, such as sufficient knowledge of the English language and a guaranteed certificate of enrolment – plus,  students hvs to prove that they are able to sustain themselves and pay for their university and their stay. Free movement of people makes for a great opportunity, and taking this away is costly for students and makes for a lot of red tape.

I hope the prices won't skyrocket... I was going to apply to oxford and LSE in 2018, but I think 10k a year is really the upper limit for me. Don't need prices like in the US, for small added value.

Perhaps I should look into studying in Scotland, even though the universities aren't as good.

By the way, my 'hope you face the consequences' is based on that I don't wish for the rest of the EU to leave the EU. It scares me when someone like Marine le Pen wants to 'go into a new era never before seen, an era of nation states', while we have had an era of nation states, leading to countless wars. The more chaotic the UK exit, the more economic slowdown, the smaller the effects on immigration, the less ammunition for Euroskeptic Europeans. If the EU shows to have no added value economically, it will stimulate many countries to have their own referendum. Eventually perhaps only the real pro-EU countries like Germany and Spain (and Ireland?) will be left.
