elijahfan 25,882
Philanthropist isn't a career: artists should be paid for their work, and everyone thinking otherwise is just full of ****. Artists have been ****ed over long enough by the digital age, they're damn right to fight for what they're owed. And for all of you hypocrites saying artists are rich enough, think of all the small performers who are struggling making a dime amongst the current music industry. If big names didn't fight for them, nothing would change. Not to mention that the money artists are currently losing is going into someone else's pocket anyway, which is pretty damn unfair to say the least. That won't change anything to your lives, but it will just help make the entertainment industry a little more fair. So you can all take a chill pill and have a ****ing seat. Jay.P 2,336
Even though I don't agree with this "war", I'm so so so tired of "music not the bling". That phrase is so overused. Do you hear that? It's poison.

Chris Evans 8,917
this has nothing to do with VEVO did yall even read the article?? This is about random users uploading artists' music and getting away with it until it gets reported for copyright I'm not entirely convinced Gaga "signed" this petition- it just sounds like they just wanted to throw another big name in the mix Also Gaga's team does not report her music religiously there are 100s of lyric videos that have been up for years Now when it comes to Taylor/Beyonce their teams are ruthless with taking things down- you can't hear any of their new music unless they uploaded it themselves on VEVO
Monster2015 1,117
LOLOL you guys clearly don't understand the motive behind this. Songwriters are always ambushed and for years on end never received their share of profits. I don't see how this is contradicting of Gaga. Yea she promoted "music not the bling" but artists/songwriters need to be compensated for their work in one way, shape, or form. So bye.

Youtube already notifies users when they upload copyrighted material, but only blocks the video in some countries and sometimes don't let them be viewed in mobile devices. But I'll never forgive Taylor's team for removing my video AND giving my channel a notification for a whole year.

Miel 15,009
I don't know, the first thing I thought of about all this is it possibly being in defense of artists that don't have the protection or security that some big-names do, including Gaga. I need to read more into it. 3 points in and ready for more
StrawberryBlond 14,657
Didn't expect this from her, but ok. Considering she once said: "How much money do these artists really need?" I expected not such an over-reaction. If all these artists listed are so protective of their work, why isn't all their music impossible to find on the site? Because if they want to keep it protected so much, they'd just ask for it to be taken down, so only official version remain, like Taylor and Beyonce do, right? So, some of these names, who allow their music to be freely available confuses me. Although, I will say that at least not all the names here are the biggest, there is some artists notably lower down the rungs in terms of net worth, the kind who might actually be suffering due to the system. So, that's something. But there's still too many people on there who are too comfortably well-off for my liking. I am also confused about what this entire petition is about and what it aims for. More money to the artist for use of their music on the site, obviously. But does it mean that any un-authorised video posted by a civilian user (whether that be a music video or original content with a song in the background or a lyric video) will be removed too? That bit is not made clear. The site's been plagued with threats of shut-down consistently before Google took it over (that was the only positive thing the Google takeover created) but it never happened. Take-down notices occured, ads got played alongside/in videos, links were given to itunes so use of the songs could turn into a sale, etc. And of course, Vevo was created, which not only gave artists money for views, but which ensured all official music videos became the only ones online and user-uploaded ones vanished forever. Seemed like a good system. But a bit of protest to the system occurs occasionally. But it never goes anywhere. But every time it does, I become afraid something might actually change. This would be the end of music being freely available to listen to and judge before buying it (something artists and record labels are terrified of - the idea of the public seeing how mediocre they are). And it could also be the end of fair use videos (I've got an account full of montage videos with ice skating put to music and while I gave up on all that 6 years ago, I still don't like the idea of them being deleted, erasing the enjoyment of those who watched them and possibly having my account deleted in the process). Fair use is called fair use for a reason and it should be allowed, 100%. Taking down user-uploaded music videos? Fine. Taking down user-uploaded lyric videos when there is already an official lyric video uploaded? Fine. Putting ads before user-uploaded videos that contain artists content? Fine. Giving artists money for views of user-uploaded videos that contain their content? Fine. But don't even think about removing videos that simply use a song in the background or as part of a montage for entertainment purposes or incorporates the song in any way that is clearly not intended for gaining a profit. That is fair use and it's part of our rights.
