I wish I could've included The King Has Lost His Crown, If It Wasn't for the Nights, Lovers Live a Little Longer and Summer Night City but that would make 9/18 Voulez-Vous songs lol and Like an Angel Passing... is a masterpiece but not really its place here. on-topic, starting the year after ABBA disbanded, it took Madonna 3x the time and 100x the involvement and resources to produce the songs on Celebration, so no matter whose songs you prefer ABBA will always be the more impressive pop music masters. Literally everyone will know the hits whereas people would only know a handful of Madge's I'm from Europe and would massively disagree with this. Once again, not to diminish ABBA's legacy or their vast amount of hit singles, but people in Europe only know a handful of Madonna's singles? That's simply not true. She's the highest selling female artist ever. I'd say both artists have a large number of memorable singles that most acts could dream of, but Madonna was active for longer due to ABBA's disbandment, which makes her more legendary in my eyes as she's relevant to more generations. That being said the popularity of ABBA's singles of course lives on, especially thanks to the Mamma Mia musical and film. But Madonna has achieved a lot more and that's indisputable. Indeed, those things have all cemented her legacy as one of the most important pop stars of all time. But you think the likes of Holiday, Papa Don't Preach, Material Girl, La Isla Bonita, Into The Groove, Ray of Light, Frozen etc are just forgotten? To blatantly dismiss the amount of huge hits she's had is slightly absurd and confusing to me... Her track record and consistency is undeniable and almost unmatched by anyone. Your evidence is purely anecdotal but the numbers speak. And this point is very general and nothing to do with comparing her to ABBA so perhaps off topic here, but of course ABBA have an abnormally impressive amount of hits within a relatively small period of time. There's no denying that.

I'm just saying I have observations from different European cultures. and ABBA sold as many records as Madonna with much less releases and much less sales from the US and UK markets so what "the numbers speak" is that they are indeed more successful in continental Europe. I know a lot of people who are familiar with pretty much all of Madonna's singles discography but it's still mostly the gay community that recognizes her for having a great catalogue.
