Guest
This person is completely ridiculous and off-base but I am aghast to see the members on here using their actions to denigrate an important social movement like BLM. The protection of unarmed black people (and other racial minotities) from racial profiling and extreme police brutality would be a tremendous step towards a world of equality. It is as valid as the Gay Rights movement towards gay/straight equality. If you can see how bigotry towards gay people led to the death of the Orlando victims, but can't see that the racism and hatred this country has fostered towards black folks frequently gets them killed just the same (and thus making racial equality movements crucial as well), I seriously question your intelligence. It's not the message movement that people take issue with. It's a small group of people in the movement that people have a problem with. The black lives matter movement has attracted a few people like this girl in the video and their voices are louder than all the normal sane people - that has created a very distorted picture of what the black liver matter movement truly is. Except no. Go back a few pages and there's people calling the movement as a whole cancer. If the actions of one individual is enough to tarnish your opinion of an entire movement, you probably didn't have a very high opinion of it in the first place ? I don't like everything some feminists have said about transwomen, or black women, or gay men / women. You don't see me calling feminism cancer do you ? My point is that if the message of the movement is valuable, I'd rather ignore agitators like the person in this video who besmirch what it's really about, and focus on the ones who are working for the greater good. That's applicable to all social movements, including BLM, gay rights, feminism, and all.
ThomastheMonster 288
This was for the victims of Orlando, for the LGBT+ community, not about BLM. I would've been so mad/hurt if I was there to mourn the loss of people I knew, members of my community and then I hear "I was scared to come on this stage because you're white and I'm black" etc. There is a time and a place. They are the ones getting all the attention for BLM though - when the movement garners such widespread attention for "activists" like the girl in the video it becomes easy to see why some people write off a whole movement. Feminism has more positive light attached to it which is why the negative voices are ignored. Feminism has a more positive light attached to it as well due to it being less controversial. When you have Hollywood taking it and putting it in the forefront it drowns out all the nobodies who give it a bad name. BLM doesn't have the same force - so instead when we see articles about BLM it is about what they're doing wrong, not what they're doing right. When they do the right thing it goes unnoticed because it's not as interseting of a story as "Look at this crazy girl protesting and being a hypocrite.". Until BLM is embraced by Hollywood culture on a large scale, the movement wont be viewed by everyone for what it truly is. I don't disagree with anything you said, but it's important to try and understand where people are coming from. You can't help them change unless you know what lead them to the point they're at. Definitely not. Manboys hate feminist and their only response is against the extreme ones because there is nothing else to hate (except that they believe women are lesser than men, which most of them do). The extremist are nothing more than minor annoyances. Yet bigots use them to try to discredit whole movements. Sure, it wouldn't be a problem if there wasn't extremist, but it also wouldn't be a problem if people took their head out of their ass and realized that stupid people do not do anything to discredit a social movement. But let's be honest, people who use the word "feminazi" are stupid beyond comprehension and beyond saving.
Kayla 7,595
On 6/16/2016 at 2:46 AM, Evan Peters said: it's called "i like to twist the definition of racism to fit my agenda" you can be racist against any race. that's why it's called racism. honestly, i don't take anyone who says a certain race can't experience racism/be racist seriously because all it shows is a lack of reading comprehension in regards to the definition of racism. here's the defintion: rac·ism ˈrāˌsizəm/ noun the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. nowhere does it talk about being 'oppressed' in order to experience racism. i swear, how do ya'll function in the real world when you get your knowledge from tumblr social justice warriors. this isn't an attack on you, but rather an explanation on the ignorance that exists in this thread. i don't even know why this turned into a white people vs. black people thing but i forgot people like to demonize white people any chance they get. as for the annoying people in this thread (ya know who you are) don't quote me because i don't like arguing with people who can't even understand the definition of a word. ot: this just screams "i'm very uncomfortable when people aren't talking about me." reminds me of the black americans who were bitching about people caring about people dying in the Paris bombings but not paying attention to the black teens getting shot by police in america. everything is a competition, apparently. The other people taking the time to talk about this at length are referring to actual sociological uses of the word that extend beyond a few sentences in the dictionary. You're talking about baseline definition of the word, they're talking about actual application of the word in a social setting related to historical contexts. It's the difference between looking up "chlorophyll" in the dictionary and looking up "the use of chlorophyll fluorescence nomenclature in plant stress physiology" in a scientific journal. One of those is gonna go beyond your basic definition.....So please don't come at these people for "lack of reading comprehension" when your reading comprehension for this issue doesn't extend beyond a few sentences on dictionary.com. (Also- "I'm very uncomfortable when people aren't talking about me" happens more when people pull the "ALL lives matter!" card or talk about "men's rights too!" tbh) That being said- the girl in the video in the OP is TOTALLY one of those "I'm very uncomfortable when people aren't talking about me" types, and she's ****ing awful.
