BREAKING: 'Powerful Explosion' in Beirut

It is not yet clear what caused the blast, which happened in a popular shopping district in the Lebanese capital.

A loud explosion has been heard in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, with a resident of the city telling teleSUR the blast happened near one of the most popular tourist spots.

The explosion was heard in the residential Ras Beirut neighborhood, according to local journalist Kareem Chehayeb, "very close to Hamra Street, which has the American University of Beirut, pubs and is very crowded."

Chehayeb told teleSUR the sound of ambulances could be heard rushing to the scene. There are no reported casualties so far.

I do hope there are really no casualties. It is saddening.

No casualties thank God. :diane:

Called my Mom and everyone is safe.

This was by Hezbollah. There's a current situation where their assets in the bank were frozen for various reasons (criminal and otherwise) and this was an outright threat against the bank.

Welcome to my world ladies and gents.
