TheJackMonster 1,857
Jamie tried to put this question to Gaga in a kind way but it was essentially "How many people are involved in creating your image" and she kind of dodged it.

People use the word character in a bad way when referring to her, meaning she is fake and constructed only to seek attention and become famous. But Gaga is simply a better version of Stefani, a version without the insecurities, but people usually only perceive her as a weird theatrical woman and while she may actually be a weird theatrical woman sometimes, she is also many other things that people keep ignoring. Jo Calderone is a character, Candy Warhol is a character, Yüyi is a character, Gaga is simply a better version of Stefani, who happens to be more confident to do what she likes, and for this reason a character, but this doesn't mean she's not herself, she's just expressing it in an artistic way. Of course I may be wrong, but to me it's clear what she's saying and she has been explaining it since the beginning of her career. In many reviews of ARTPOP people criticize her music and say it's not relatable and too much self-centered. They are right, but that's because she has been explaining who Gaga is since the beginning: a global pop star (The Fame) who people love and hate because of the theatrical way she expresses herself (The Fame Monster), but that at the core is not different from Stefani (Born This Way) and therefore isn't afraid to state continuously her passions (ARTPOP). This became clear to me since the Marry The Night video, but people keep ignoring the interlude so... Anyway, can we appreciate how awesome her make-up is in this interview? ****ing awesome post! the highlighted part is brilliant and i fully agree with that. just to respond: the problem is indeed with terminology. character and persona are not the right words to describe the "difference" between stefani/gagz and, let's say, yüyi. (let's pretend there is a difference, when, in fact, there isn't.) i mean gagz is obviously not a persona, she's gagz herself. maybe, just like in the terminology of subject theory, self inflection would be better. yüyi, on the other hand, belongs to gagz and, therefore, persona can be justified, i guess. anyway, using the word character is entirely inapplicable when it comes to gagz. cherry on top when people accuse her of being a caricature of herself. that's insulting to gaga's artistry and integrity. she creates and lives her work—she invented and defined herself and continues to do so. if that's not the definition of being an artist, i don't know what is. so no, she shouldn't dumb down her artistry just because some don't seem to get it. i mean... not getting is, at some level, also the point. you can't expect her to serve everything on a silver platter in the easiest way possible. whatever, my thought process is just as chaotic as hers, lmao. if you hurt taylor swift, i'll hurt you back

Agree. She doesn't state these things clearly but after a couple of times it becomes obvious. And I'm surprised by the amount of fans who seems to not get it. It's understandable if it's someone who only casually enjoys her music, but people how claim to be her ultimate fan, to know every single frame of her videos and every single word she says...
