Let's use this post as a bit of a history lesson/schooling since this thread looks like it needs it:

The event, billed as The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, is considered part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport, which comprises three of the most prestigious motorsports events in the world. The official attendance is not disclosed by Speedway management, but the permanent seating capacity is upwards of 250,000, and infield patrons raise the race-day attendance to approximately 300,000.

The race is the most prestigious event of the IndyCar calendar, and one of the oldest and most important automobile races. It has been avouched to be the largest single-day sporting event in the entire world. Likewise, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway itself is regarded as the world's largest sporting facility in terms of capacity. The total purse exceeded $13 million in 2011, with over $2.5 million awarded to the winner, making it one of the richest cash prize funds in sports.

So take Mario + Indy 500 = An amazing opportunity for Gaga.

Plus:

1. She didn't die so the jokes about her crashing are disgusting, vile, and not needed. ESPECIALLY that gif made. People actually die racing these cars, not even just indy cars but formula 1, NASCAR, what have you.

2. Most auto racing series are heavily sponsored, people pay millions of dollars to have their logos on cars, pits, crews, uniforms, etc. Millions. So what's the big deal if she got paid to show up? You get paid to show up to work, so why is this any different? Plus it looks like she was approached to do it so if you were given the opportunity to go for a ride in one of the most prestigious races in the world with one of the most prestigious drivers of all time, would you? come on no brainer. Not to mention it's the 100th running.

3. Mario (as outlined above) spent hours behind the wheel of these cars. It's not like Gaga drove herself around the track. Fastest she was going was about 60 mph (or 96 ish kmh), the same speed you guys drive on major highways. In fact, some highways post even higher than that, they would NEVER put her into a position where she could get hurt. Same danger if she was in a regular car.

Sorry for the long post, and sorry if it was abrasive but it had to be said. This is another monumental moment in Gaga's career regardless on how you spin it.

And 200mph is just the average. The lap speed record at indy500 is 236mph.

Correct, however she was not in the actual race but the parade laps, or the laps before the race. Up by the pace car. They would never put her in a position where she could get severely injured for a celebrity appearance
