J.K. Rowling: Don't ban Trump from the UK

Washington (CNN)- J.K. Rowling, who once called Donald Trump worse than her fictional Harry Potter villain Voldemort, said Monday that the billionaire mogul has her support to visit the United Kingdom and "be offensive and bigoted there."

"Only last year, we saw an online petition to ban Donald Trump from entry in the U.K. It garnered half a million signatures," she said at Pen America's annual literary gala in New York. "Now, I find almost everything that Mr. Trump says objectionable. I consider him offensive and bigoted. But he has my full support to come to my country and be offensive and bigoted there."

Rowling, who accepted an award at the Pen gala for her humanitarian work, said the freedom that protects Trump's right to speak his mind also protects her right to "call him a bigot."

"If you seek the removal of freedoms from an opponent simply on the grounds that they have offended you, you have crossed a line to stand alongside tyrants who imprison, torture and kill on exactly the same justifications," Rowling said in her speech.

I agree about letting him in, but disagree about 100% freedom of speech

freedom of speech, sure, but some speech makes people kill themselves, makes people fear for their lives, fear mongering, terrorism, etc. so I think some speech should be monitored

I've always liked the "freedom of speech but not freedom from consequences" approach to this. Say/do whatever you want but just know it's not others trying to police your thoughts when they treat you like the kind of person that says the kinds of things you say.

Trump thinks it's "PC gone wild" when he gets called a bigot for wanting to ban a fair percentage of humanity based solely on what faith they subscribe to. It's not, it's people calling him what he either is or pretends to be. "Speaking their mind" or "telling it like it is", if you will :lolga:

She is right... whether Trump is dumb and bigoted or not freedom of speech still applies. No matter how false and oppressive it is.

That's not the same thing as freedom of speech, you can be arrested or charged for committing a hate crime verbally, or assaulting somebody verbally.

People just transformed the definition of Freedom of Speech over the years and think that it means that you can say what you want. Freedom of Speech has always been limitated and has to be limitated to work properly.

What is wrong with people transforming ideas?

The First Amendment, according to it's author, was written specifically to protect unpopular political speech. So in this case J.K. could not be more accurate in saying Trump's views ought to be protected under Freedom of Speech. Even if you disregard the intention originally behind The First Amendment, Donald Trump's "hate speech" is clearly protected under United States Law. The KKK, Westboro Baptist Church, and Donald Trump have the right to spread their bigotry, in The United States. J.K. is arguing that the UK's interpretation of Freedom of Speech is too limited.

I'm not talking about the US nor Donald Trump. I'm talking about the concept of Freedom of Speech itself. I agree that the US laws are really light about the exceptions of this right (and this point is often criticized), but just like other countries, exceptions has been set up.

They say it's the last song. They don't know us, you see. It's only the last song if we let it be.
