Trends die out to quickly this days, it's not like it used to be. But i don't think there has been a real break through yet. Uptown Funk was a bit more specific on the Minneapolis Sound. That Cake by the Ocean is clearly funky. But it all seems more like what was done in the early 00's, Max Martin put some funk rythms and bass in pop music. Gaga seems to be heading in a different direction If it's her own thing, it won't have the same effect. And the lyrics and melodies, good mixing, good instrumentists is what makes difference. The industry is having a mid life crisis...not knowing what direction to take music...they're releasing songs that are basic in nature due to the fact they all follow the same melodic formula and then quickly shift into another sound to try and see what sticks. Unfortunately, declining sales and loss of money has made them blind to just allowing the artist to create organically so as to get a variety of sounds on radio and not a glob of noise.
