Why are today's popstars so basic?

Because is repetitive, all the music sounds like the music everyone else is releasing, they always sing about the same topics, and is jut not very original or interesting.

It's not that hard to identify what people find bad about it. Pop music sounds more manufactured than ever, mostly thanks to the majority of pop stars now using electronic instruments for their music. Everything pretty much sounds the same these days.

I agree that a lot of mainstream music nowadays is extremely repetitive, but there's also a lot of diversity in the music industry. Not only that, but a lot of today's top artists (Ari, Drake, Justin, Rih, etc.) have shown that they're growing as artists, tipping their toes in different sounds and getting more involved in the actual music-making process.

Being an artist isn't always about reinventing the wheel. Being an artist is giving your own interpretation of the world around you and that's what most artists do. It's kind of unfair to call everyone in the OP basic tbh. If anything, Katy needs to be dropped from the OP because she writes her music and her intention was to go FULL POP with Teenage Dream. Calling her basic isn't even a true drag.

Don't get me wrong, some of today's artists are actually good, even some of the ones I mentioned in the OP try once in a while. However in general popstars and rappers are very generic and repetitive.

Popstars like Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Meghan Trainor, Iggy, ect. keep releasing the same type of music that everyone else is releasing over and over again. A typical argument I get about this is that not everyone is artistic and that mediocre music is ok because they are pop stars, then what is the point of them calling themselves ARTISTS? Year after year the recylce the same trendy sounds with the same generic formula and there is just no creativity in them.

You are right in the sense that computer generated music makes everything more accessible. But there is a lot of electronic music that is actually very creative and unique. Is just that most mainstream artists don't bother to explore.

Meghan Trainor has revamped her sound a little bit too. It isn't "kiddish" anymore.

If you think they are all basic, that's your opinion. I think they are all just making music they enjoy making. I'm sorry that they don't live up to your standards.

I agree with you that they have been trying new things lately. Which is good. I am just saying in general, they have always been very trendy and simple with their music.
