StrawberryBlond 14,899
The tastes of the public really baffle me. This is mediocre at best and sounds like the equally mediocre Can't Feel My Face. Why do people like this dull, bland, cheesy music? And more to the point, why would they actually want to dance to it? There's no story here, nothing exciting, it doesn't go anywhere, just mindless banality from start to finish. It blows my mind how there are female artists coming out with masterpieces that can't crack the top ten and yet, a male artist makes a forgettable song in which he doesn't even need to try, he could have written in his sleep. And it becomes a big hit. How do male artists get away with releasing such s****y material? And actually get hits with it? HOW?!

Maybe you just can't appreciate a good upbeat bop for what it is.

I can appreciate a good upbeat bop when it's actually decent music. From the last couple of years, Uptown Funk is one of the very few US #1's that truly deserved its placement. I'm surprised a song that good did so well. That is the definition of a good upbeat bop. A fun song doesn't have to mean stupid lyrics, barely any lyrics, dull beats. But that's apparently what all these "dancefloor fillers" are all about, it seems. And better than 95% of what's been released this year? Here's some better singles released this year - Dangerous Woman, Kiss It Better, Cheap Thrills, Pillowtalk, Out of the Woods, New Romantics, When We Were Young, half the songs on Beyonce's album... This song is better than all of that? Really?
eifulien 2,969
Ah, I fell in love with the song from the first second. Finally something so energising! This can be the summer jam of 2016! I've been listening to it all day and I can't stop! 2 hours ago, StrawberryBlond said: The tastes of the public really baffle me. I'm just wondering, who are your favourite artists and genres, cause you seem negative way too often about pop music especially mainstream (not saying I don't agree with you up to a point, just curious)? Maybe pop music i not your thing? Cause I feel this song is so good and positive and just fun. I mean I don't think he aimed to reinvent pop with this, but that doesn't take away from its good vibe, and it's not like the trash topping the charts, sorry. 2 hours ago, StrawberryBlond said: No, I'm being deadly serious. This song is better than all of that? Really? Okay, I thought you strongly dislike Rih and Bey, am I wrong? I'm surprised DW didn't make it big on the charts. But the rest of the songs are well known I believe apart from Taylor's. Cheap Trills is basically everywhere, Pillowtalk was big and radio is playing his new single. You can hear at least 2-3 songs from 25 without them being singles on the radio in my country. And Kiss it better is already no.10 on the airplay chart from the biggest radio stations here, after debuting directly at 22 (I hear it basically once every hour, it's crazy). So what's your point about these songs? Are you from the US? Cause if you are talking about the US charts then you are right. Since 2013 the US deviated so much from the world trends that it couldn't be any more shittier than now and it's getting worse. Blurred Lines, Watch Me Nae nae, Trap queen, Cheerleader, Am I wrong, Panda are just some of the hideous examples of songs cracking the Top 10, but what can we do about their poor taste in music? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ARTPOP, for example, incorporated some elements that sounded vaguely like what had been on the radio at the time and was labeled "generic" by fans here. Meanwhile, JT releases a song that is extremely similar to what a couple major male artists did over a year ago, and it's acclaimed. 😭 If Gaga ever released something that was this on-the-nose, she would never hear the end of it.
