PopThatArt 2,193
I think actually some gays have turned away from Gaga, just because she's not the big mainstream popstar anymore they've started adhering to other women in music who are more mainstream, not to cast a shadow of internalized homophobia but some gays are such trend obsessed what's big now? I want to know so I can adhere to it kind of people. And although what Gaga has done for the gays is undeniable, some of the community want more while others feel she used gay people to sell Born This Way. I think it's more pop music and dance that is associated with gays, not necessarily Lady Gaga herself, but the kind of music she creates, just like how other women in pop are so big amongst gays, it's the style of pop dance music that's a trademark of the gay community, but there are lots of gays who like rock, contemporary, etc. The reason people like Katy or Rihanna or Beyonce are more "straight friendly" is because they flaunt their bodies in a sexualized manner that they know a lot of straight men like, most straight men when talking about Beyonce talk about liking her because of her body, not her music. Whereas Gaga I find isn't necessarily that mass market commercial kind of beauty horny men like, Gaga's beauty is more unique and classic and not so vulgar like Katy or Rihanna or Beyonce or Jennifer Lopez are with their butts and boobs always on display. Even Demi Lovato is trying to be vulgar with her body to appeal to men. And i don't think it's a bad thing at all that Gaga isn't viewed as a sex object like those other women, and I don't think Gaga should try to pander to the straight community, good music is sexless, ageless, timeless, not fad like so many of those other women make. Guest
what's so bad about being seen as a gay role model/gay artist? it dosn't necessarily mean that you only approach to these groups of people when you're releasing new music.. if it's a commercial success people will buy her records/tickets anyway. And to be honest, visiting a Gaga concert with tons of other gays is so much more fun

Are you really pretending that those straight guys whacking off to Photoshopped Bey nudes are listening to her music and going to her concerts and making her albums go #1? I think you're trying to connect things that have nothing to do with each other. And as far as artists showing their tits and ass go, Gaga probably did that more than any of her competitors so Not saying she's trying to "pander to the straights" but if any pop star presented herself as someone flaunting her body it's her.. If you need reminders: Spoiler I mean I could go on and on tbh. And before y'all haters go all corny with that "hater!" mess, I'm not saying Gaga's doing anything wrong for showing her ass and tits 100x more than any of her competitors, I'm just saying that your point doesn't make no goddamn sense If any straight guy wants to get a boner by following someone's career, it's gonna be Gaga's. Hell, you're basically guaranteed to see her ass and tits 10x a year.
CatelynnMarie 4,406
When people first meet me, 9 times out of 10 Gaga comes up into conversation somehow. A lot of times if the person I'm talking to is a straight guy, they either have no opinion and respect her as an artist, or say that she's for chicks and the gays, but they like her so she's a guilty pleasure for them. It's a bit rare that the straight guys I've spoken with genuinely like her music/her as a person/ or think she's sexy. Kind of lowkey annoys me, but there's nothing I can do about it lol. eifulien 2,969
Gaga has never been niche. She just took off by putting niche things into the spotlight. The LGBT community is one of them and Gaga emphasised it the most during BTW. But don't forget she's been doing a lot of wack stuff for the average Joe to enjoy from day 1. I think a factor possibly bigger than her LGBT advocacy is her religious incorectness. I remember during BTWB when she had a concert here, the Church was protesting against her. And it was not solely because of the gay community, she was depicted as very Christian family-unfirendly with her image, message and so on. But ofc, her pro-LGBT speeches have alienated the GP. I think most people at first were just looking at her for the thrill the wow factor but it's always been "too much" for them (not to mention the typical straight man view on pop music and pop stars). Then, she started losing fans (as many of you said, we all know 1 or 2 straight males, for whom Gags is a guilty pleasure). Not to mention she started losing fans during ARTPOP. (BTW bandwagoners) I also believe that up until 2014 Gaga wasn't really afraid and she was conciosuly putting off portions of the fanbase. I mean, very few people outside the gay community care about her on a personal level, and the worship has been mutual and somewhat exclusive. Since 2014 she's been attracting a much more mature audience, while retaining the leftovers from the first 4 eras. Edit: I forgot to mention my best friend who is straight and he loved BTW more than I do. He didn't like ARTPOP so much, but I think he is looking forward to LG5. I'm a lucky guy to have such a person so close to me cause it's truly rare.

I think that image actually was constructed mostly in 2010 (not 2011 like many pretend) when she basically talked about "gay stuff" in every single interview. Plus, statements like "gay men understand me because they get my aesthetic" didn't help I think that reputation was never that overpowering though. I think more people associate her with bad music (though her talent is definitely getting more and more attention) and "theatrics" than some gayness. I think a lot of people think she's talented but just don't like her music, which is why they don't get pulled in completely. But that's not the same thing as being in a gay niche. Exactly, her image has been like this far before born this way. TBT to fame kills 'the gay tour'
PMKKARDASHiAN 8,570
Not until she started pandering to the lost tragic souls of the gays and only made music for them (BTW and beyond). Several straight men loved her because she made good ass music, with easy lyrics, and had a cool persona and image. It wasn't until she felt she needed to save all the bleeding hearts gays that she became the gay niche artist

dopega 3,737
Idk, people around me dont talk a **** about Born this way. Rivington Rebel 359
Yes, she is a gay icon although I'm asexual and a big fan. When she has songs with lyrics like "I want to take a ride on your disco stick" of course she is going to appeal to people who are attracted to men. I know there's other factors such as her message and looks which appeal to gay people, but people with other sexualities can still like her.

Even my mom thinks that, and she doesn't know **** about pop culture. It's ****ing tragic bc the world is still homophobic af, they're just more silent and sneaky about it. #LG5 needs to delete her "gay niche"-ness so badly. I wanna talk about her like people talk about Beyonce. Heterosexual guys don't buy Beyonce music, because most heterosexual guys are into rock, indie, or rap. They aren't buying Katy Perry, Beyonce, Gaga. I'm speaking in general. Of course, there are a small portion that do. Girls buy all of the above if the album is good. Bey fought through some down periods. Gaga will too.
