I've never considered myself a fan but this album is incredible. I'm not sure if people don't like it because it's not the kind of music they wanted but I think it's very hard to argue the artistry that's gone into this project.

But now shes on iTunes, cause nobody was getting Tidal :tea:

Except no

It was a Tidal streaming exclusive. Pretty soon after the album dropped on Tidal word came out that it would be hitting iTunes soon so it was obviously the plan... Same thing that happened with Anti. The only Tidal album release that went against it's initial release plan was The Life of Pablo...

You tried though.

Meanwhile lol her "bad" album with "no good songs" are destroying the iTunes Charts right now lol. Gaga better surprise release so all her songs make the top 10 on iTunes lol

Interesting cos I heard that "no one outside her stans" care about this album hmm :green:

Well, until now, I'd said that I'd never heard something truly original or different from Beyonce but she's finally giving me a bit of a new experience listening to her music. There were rumours that this album was going to be experimental and they weren't lying.

My favourite tracks are Pray You Catch Me, Don't Hurt Yourself, 6 Inch, Daddy Lessons, Love Drought, Sandcastles and Freedom. Every track is a different from each other, which is quite unusual for a Beyonce album and she's using sounds she's never used before. Her emotion is really strong and every lyric comes across really real and it's hard to believe she's milking any of her relationship troubles because of it. Self titled was the realest Beyonce but this one takes the cake. While I've been very vocal about my issues with Beyonce's attempts at tackling race issues with Formation, I will say that Freedom is the way she should be going about things. Not making it all about herself, making it for everyone, a much better beat, etc. Kendrick's rap verse is also one of the best I've heard from him and this makes me start to understand the praise for him. Daddy Lessons was a very surprising trip down a different (country) lane that took a while to get into but was actually quite charming. I really liked all the songs about Jay's cheating because they were just so natural, what every woman who'd been cheated on would think, even if she wasn't famous and rich like Beyonce. I don't know why I dismissed Don't Hurt Yourself on first listen, but I'm so glad I went back to give it a second chance because it's the best song on the album! I've always liked the passionate, sexy sound that Jack White brings to his music, which is always a big plus, even if the entire song isn't amazing. But this is WOW. Powerful, bombastic, sexy, takes no prisoners. This is the most cut-throat Beyonce's ever been on a song and I love it. There is no way she can be exaggerating her issues, you can't fake this realness. This song is so awesome that the listener ends up embodying it. I felt like I was the one being cheated on and I'm not even married! I think this is the woman we'd all like to hope we'd be if our men cheated, am I right, ladies?

But the downside is that just because I listed these tracks as the best doesn't mean that they're knock-it-out-the-park perfect. Pray You Catch You, Daddy Lessons and Sandcastles, I ranked as ok 3/5's because there could have been more pizzazz there. Songs need to have big wow moments in them (not necessarily loud ones, just profound ones) and there just wasn't enough of that here for me. And 6 Inch and Love Drought are just above average 3.5/5's. The only truly amazing song was Don't Hurt Yourself. As for the other songs, I thought All Night was just under-par. And I found Hold Up, Sorry and Formation to be terrible. Hold Up is certainly in the vein of the better relationship-related songs, but the beat was just bad and there was too much talk-singing in there for me. Sorry felt far too juvenile and out of place on this otherwise mature sounding album. And Formation...well, I've already gone into my opinions of that many a time. Like I said, look to Freedom to see an example of a good racial issues song.

At the end of the day, I rate it a 3/5. I know that may seem low, but seriously, that's a good mark for me when it's a Beyonce album. And as an album reviewer, I run into loads of album's every year that are worse than that, so if you make an ok album, thank you! I actually looked back at some songs from her last album and it actually caused me to raise my original score from 2.5 to 3/5 on that one, so that's a consolation for the fans. I like it better than her last album, but not by much. By being shorter, the quality overall worked out better.
