Sunday 2,183 Posted April 17, 2016 Share Posted April 17, 2016 I dont think badly produced is the term but the first version we heard of Dope/IWBWY, MANiCURE, Sex Dreams and Aura were miles better than what we have now. Venus is a lyrical mess, imo. Its instrumentals are amazing, but if Gaga meant the song to be a silly, satiric song she could at least make the lyrics to have a bit more sense. If not, she could at least put more soul in to it. It just doesn't feel it has a backbone. If she could have managed to pull that and released it as a single, everybody would be strutting "Rocket #9 take off to the planet!" anytime during 2013. ARTPOP's bridge was horribly made, nuff said. Dope has a strong message, but similarly what the OP said, I have no idea if it's supposed to be there to hit us, or raise one of our eyebrows. It's sparse and minimalist compared to the other tracks on ARTPOP. Listen to the instrumental and you'll know what I mean. I don't really give in to the whole good vs bad conundrum. I prefer to look at it in terms of overproduced and underproduced. For me, Born This Way is the only Gaga song I truly feel was overproduced. And in fact Gaga said herself that while it took her only about ten minutes to write the lyrics, the song took the most amount of months to produce. Many songs on ARTPOP were overproduced, but obviously we know it was her record label who were the ones telling Gaga to change this, change that.
