Cirque du Soleil cancels NC shows over HB2

Renowned acrobatic troupe Cirque du Soleil said Friday that it is canceling all of its shows in North Carolina because of the state's new law setting discrimination policy.

"Cirque du Soleil strongly believes in diversity and equality for every individual and is opposed to discrimination in any form," the troupe said in a statement, calling the North Carolina law "an important regression to ensuring human rights for all."

House Bill 2, which was signed into law last month after a one-day special session of the legislature requires people to use the public bathroom that corresponds to the gender listed on their birth certificates, excludes gays and transgender people from protections against employment and public accommodations discrimination and bars cities and counties from extending such protections to them. Cirque du Soleil was scheduled to perform its OVO show in Greensboro April 20-24 and Charlotte July 6-10 and perform its TORUK – Avatar show in Raleigh June 22-26. Tickets bought online or over the phone will be refunded immediately, while in-person purchases must be returned to where they were bought for a refund.

I hope they repeal this law before someone I actually like cancels their shows. Being in the lgbt community is hard enough without both sides making things annoying. Done with this mess. Waiting for the governor to say this has been a social experiment or something :rip:

I'm from NC and I'm LIVING for all the backlash the state continues to receive on an almost daily basis :derpga: Though I will say I never expected Cirque to make such a move. This will have steep financial impacts because the company is very popular there, almost every show that visits sells out.

If this isn't repealed, Gaga will never go to your state.

You don't have to worry about that whether or not it will be repealed. McCronnie and his minions will be voted out this November. This idiotic law has sealed his fate as a one term governor. I'd be HIGHLY shocked if he's re-elected.

Let us pray. The law is so insane to begin with. I hope the people in this state are outraged enough to give them the boot. I know I am.

I've been so angry ever since it was signed, I haven't been able to fully concentrate on my school work :air: And everyday I get on Facebook and see the clown show in Raleigh dragging our state through the pits again and I'm like :wtf: To think we used to be an emblem of progress in the South, now we are on par with Mississippi :deadbanana:
