Judas Oyster 1,915
That's a very interesting question, yet impossible to answer. I think BTW earned Gaga a lot of respect in terms of what she stands for, both ideology behind her but also how brave she is musically and visually. Maybe without that her next album would have seen as a flop? Or maybe ARTPOP would be successful but when BTW then came right after it would make BTW even more respected? Idk I loved BTW, the message and how brave she was. I wish she could explain even more what she meant by saying that to release that album so early was risky. Hyperballad 4,310
ARTPOP should've went Applause-September 2013 *Released after Roar,Radio friendly* Venus-December 2013 *Good promo, video & a good radio song and barely any competition peaked at #34 without promo* Sexxx Dreams-March 2014 *No competition and Birthday is a major flop, was a major bop and was a highlight of the album and was recieved well by critics and the GP* Do What U Want-June 2014 *Was huge in Europe, peaked at #13 in the US with no promo and #3 in Canada with no promo, has the potential to be a summer jam, recieved well, good and better promo,no controversial video, was a huge radio hit* Gypsy-October 2014 *Farewell video, good promo, well recieved by the GP and critics*

Well, you have a major point, but I don't think her and Troy clashed as much back in the day. Not to mention, something in her or him could have changed since those days. I'm not saying it's the only thing that stopped ARTPOP from being commercially successful, her lack of promotion after bobby took over substantiates that, but he was a big factor during release. Not a full release, but it would really work with Gypsy being a farewell, in my opinion. This kitten over here (meow)
KingRedd 3,139
I think about this a lot lol. I think ARTPOP would do well ultimately because around 2011-2012 was when EDM was fresh music to the GP. They would've been amazed at swine, donantella, MJH etc. May I Read You? 😎
socotra 3,345
I think there's definitely more continuity stylistically and sonically between TF/M and BTW than there are between TF/M and ARTPOP. That being said, I think ARTPOP either way would have fared significantly better with the promotion dedicated to BTW.

TimisaMonster 31,073
Well...ARTPOP would've been another hit album! Coming off the Telephone sequel, Aura being the finale AND first single would've been perhaps a HIGHLIGHT in Gaga's career and satisfied the anticipation sooner. Venus as the second single as planned would've been another infectious and weird song that would've been a smash! The visuals looked dark and Gaga seemed very eager to promote her first self produced song. It also would've served as the beginning of a new trilogy. GUY following as the sequel is appropriate lyrically to come after Venus and the video was very well done. (GUY version only) not the long weird cramped version with 4 songs Following would've been the finale to the ARTPOP trilogy...Sexxx Dreams. Being that Venus and GUY are both heavy in sexual themes and fantasy, it only makes sense to stay consistent thematically. The video would've been epic and show a side of Gaga that was seductive...not trashy. The final single would've been Applause appropriately to END the era...not start it off.... The video would end with Gaga finishing her "performance" and the crowd shouting Gaga's name for more entertainment. Just as Gaga is about to end the show, she turns back around and the curtains open again. SCREEN GOES BLACK. The next album to be released 2 months later.... ARTPOP ACT II: ENCORE! THIS really was how Gaga was planning the era to go.... Stream my new single, 💜"Heartbeat"💜, on Spotify!

No, Applause had too good of longevity, you can't release a second single in September, and Do What U Want was the perfect follow up to Applause. It falls as a fan favorite like Bloody Mary, So Happy I Could Die, etc. songs that would have never worked as a single. Then there's others like Gypsy and Monster that needed to be singles. Venus is actually one of her weirdest songs, I showed it to some people and the hated it The night sky tells all
Ziggy 12,043
It's hard to say. I think it probably would have done similar numbers, but there would have been damage to her credibility. Whether Born This Way was your cup of tea or not, it did tell people that this was a woman willing to experiment with her sound despite success. It told people that she had balls and a willingness to pursue and cite her musical influences explicitly despite what may happen on the charts. It wasn't a huge deviation or anything, but you could tell that beneath some of the clunkier bits, there was a woman who knew a lot about music. In contrast, I think ARTPOP would have been a safer release for her after two very dance-pop-esque records. It would have said that despite her commercial success, she was unwilling to branch out and push herself in a different direction. She didn't want to innovate her own sound. Born This Way may not have been as critically successful as the TF/M, but it did open the floodgates to the music industry taking her seriously as an artist. hELXIG 43,374
I'll put it simply: after coming out of TFMonster era, with no concept of BTW or it's era or the messages or music or fashion or ANY of it, I think the fans would've loved ARTPOP. But because it came out after BTW and all of it's glory and imagery and success, the fans shat all over it, because it didn't meet their super high expectations. I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
