androiduser 7,438
in my opinion, in most cases it's the lead single that makes or breaks an album. Applause was a great song, but it just took too long to catch the attention, and it couldn't carry the whole album when it was needed. And then that whole mess with the other singles did additional damage. Overall, the album was badly presented and marketed.

Yo GagaGaga 6,541
All of her other albums had songs that the GP knew about The Fame- Just Dance, Poker Face, LoveGame, Paparazzi TFM- Bad Romance, Telephone, Alejandro BTW- Born This Way, Judas, The Edge of Glory, Yoü and I (American GP) and maybe Marry the Night but the GP only really knew about Applause, which wasn't as appealing as her previous bops, and some knew about DWUW. If the GP only hear one or two songs on the radio from that abum and only watch one video they'll pass over the rest of the album, because every other LG album has a lot of GP friendly singles so people judged them as good albums. but it was mostly bad management tho... djBuffoon 12,029
Long story short, nothing caused it to flop. Because it didn't. It basically sold as much as everyone else that year. Why did it sell less than expected? Promotional opportunities were missed, and in general the era was handled extremely poorly, two excellent videos and some great live performances notwithstanding. I'm no longer surprised when I meet casual Gaga fans and they claim to have not really heard the album (although it is their loss).
Batwings 12,847
Because of basic ass Little Flopsters who refused to B.U.Y. the album. Â
degenerate 526
Bad lead single choice, her manager gave up on her, she herself didn't even care about the era, like two months went by without a promotional spot in the US, lack of 2nd single video, her completely disappearing after January 1st until March, her off the wall/offputting online persona, Katy's overshadowing, the album "ARTPOP" message was asinine and impossible to understand, not to mention that the music was simply subpar. Just a disaster thru and thru
Arizona Sky 10,913
She continued the same sound as she had in her previous era as well as the gimmicks. The public got tired of it. Also it was bad timing & poor management. With LG5 I hope Gaga shows the public a different side of her. I'm here for raw/emotional records using her real voice + instruments ala Back To Black.
